Printing to Network Printer

#1 Post by Toastrack » Mon Mar 31, 2014 4:43 am

I'm trying to put my Canon Pixma 4500 on the network as a network printer, but cannot get Mepis to work it. I know the printer is OK on the network because the WinXP PC can print to it just fine.

When I go into System Settings > Printer Configuration I get two successive Error messages:-

Error: Option 'lpi' has value "Notimplemented" and cannot be edited

and

Error: Option 'cpi' has value "Notimplemented" and cannot be edited.

Attempts then to set up a new network printer then of course fail.

I believe the network is working OK, as I can access the internet via the same router, and also the WinXP machine without a problem, and the router identifies the Mepis machine in its Clients List, (although it names it "none" - may be this is a clue?).

I can find the driver software for the printer OK.

:frown:

I'm not the expert here -- I've got a printer connected to my main MEPIS machine that nothing else on the network that isn't running MEPIS (Windows or antiX) can print to -- but have you verified that all your machines have the same workgroup name?
MEPIS 11 64-bit, MSI P6NGM-L motherboard, Core 2 Quad 9400 2.67 GHz, 4 GiB PC2-5300 RAM, 1 GiB nVidia GT520 on PCI Express x16.

I don't think the error messages are the problem. I get one of these when I set up my Samsung mfp but installation proceeds fine if I ignore it.

AsRock FM2A88X-ITX+, A8-6500, 8GB, 120GB Samsung SSD (GPT), 1TB HDD (MBR), MX-17.1
Lenovo Thinkpad X220, dual-core i5, 3MB, 320GB Hitachi HDD, Win7, MX-17.1

I get the same error message with my HP printer and it does not affect a connection. So we need to look elsewhere.

You might try using a browser to access CUPS directly

Code: Select all

http://localhost:631
. I have seen examples before where that was successful when the standard method did not work.

Is there somewhere in Mepis where one can check if the printer is set to be enabled? I know on MX14 that is an issue (happened to me twice now that things were unchecked so un-enabled). Is there a way to find out on TS's Mepis if that is the case?

What I had to do to get my network Brother printer to work was to do as Jerry suggests and:

"If your printer is not listed on "http://localhost:631/printers", please go to "http://localhost:631/admin" and click "Add printer" and select proper device and driver." from the Brother installation directions.

I had already downloaded and installed the CUPS and LPR drivers (wasn't sure what I really needed), it was just a matter of selecting the Administration tab in the web browser, and then select and install.

Hope this helps,
Phil

When I try CUPS it asks which "other printer" I want, and I don't know how to manswer the question.

As regards enabling a printer, this is easy if you go into CUPS and choose the relevan printer, then yoy can set it to enabled. I don't understand how / why printers get disabled though.

Can you please post a screencapture of the admin page where you see that message?
