Bible software very outdated

#1 Post by m_pav »

I installed Bibletime and it failed to update the works database, checked the 2.10.1 version release date was some 5 years back.
The latest stable version is 2.11.2 and dated only last year. Is it possible to repackage it for the test repo?

I see there is a flatpak available in MXPI with no version number, but I've never taken to the flatpack type of installation.

I also checked Xiphos and the repo version is 3 years old. I tried it about a year ago, but I've never taken the the Gnome desktop look and feel.

Have you seen theWord? It needs WINE, but is very powerful, free, and has a lot of resources. There are a couple of threads here on it. You can find it at www.theword.net.
MX-19-KDE x64, on Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, SSD. Nvidia graphics.

The latest Bibletime 2.11.2 requires at least Qt5 5.9, and we have 5.7.1. I think all the 2.11 versions require that.

I did backport the newest Xiphos 4.1.0.1, and it runs, so am uploading it and its newer dependencies now.

Well, Bibletime 2.11.1 builds and runs, so I'm sending that up.

Tim and I still aren't able to download the Bible modules online with the new versions, but they will install from a local folder.

I was able to install and run the current release of the Windows Xiphos in Wine, but it also would not show any modules for download from the ftp server after a refresh.

The Bible itself is The Word of God which has existed since He created the world. It is unchanging yesterday, today and forever.
Why then would it need updated software to run it?

Software can contain bugs that need fixing, or can have features added to it. Like searches, sorting on certain words, you name it.
MX-23.2_x64 July 31 2023 * 6.1.0-20-amd64 ext4 Xfce 4.18.1 * 8core AMD Ryzen 7 2700

sometimes you do need that updated software, in order to run some program,,
as your Operating System, amongst others, is always updating.

that suggestion, from paul1149 is actually an great idea:
- some of these programs can be run under the ./wine environment.
and I've done just that very suggestion, as well as some other programs, too.

Thanks!

BibleTime 2.11.1 seems to be working for me.

Xiphos 4.1.0.1 doesn't open for me. When I try opening in terminal I get:

Code: Select all

$ xiphos
xiphos: symbol lookup error: xiphos: undefined symbol: _ZN9BibleSync16TransmitInternalEcNSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEEES5_S5_S5_S5_
The version in stable (4.0.4) works.

Exactly. One searching bug I noted in BibleTime seems to remain unfixed however.
JeffA wrote: Wed Jan 16, 2019 4:52 pmI've found some unexpected search results in BibleTime. For example when I search for the word "reason" in the KJV I get less results for BibleTime. BibleTime finds 63 verses, theWord and Bible Analyzer finds 69 verses. Two of the verses that BibleTime doesn't find are Exodus 3:7 and Exodus 8:24. I found similar results for other words that BibleTime seems to miss some instances of.
JeffA wrote: Thu Jan 17, 2019 4:58 pm it appears that if the word you're searching for comes in a verse after the name "LORD" in all caps with two different sizes, then that word isn't found. If it appears before the name in a verse it does find it.
