MX 17 Repository: The Flatpak Thread

#1 Post by Stevo » Tue Sep 18, 2018 1:12 pm

After updating flatpak to 1.0.1 in our main repo to support the new features in MX Package Installer, we now have flatpak 1.0.2 available in our test repository.
Changes in 1.0.2

The dbus proxy is now available in a separate git module, xdg-dbus-portal,
which is imported into flatpak as a submodule. It is possible to build
flatpak against the system xdg-dbus-portal instead, but this is not currently
very useful as no other applications yet depend on xdg-dbus-portal.
Build regressions with older versions of glib have been fixed.
Flatpak ps now also tracks the pid the main process inside the sandbox.
Added flatpak override --reset to reset overrides for an app.
Added flatpak override --show to show overrides for an app.
flatpak install now automatically pick user or system based on the remote
name given (unless the remote exists in both).
flatpak uninstall --unused now does not remove SDKs if some installed app
refers to them.
Fixed bug where flatpak uninstall --unused prompted for uninstall twice.
Set IO class on the system helper to "idle", which should cause backgroun
updates to affect the system less.
Fixed regression in flatpak uninstall --no-related.
Better handling of empty collection ids in flatpak bundles.
Cleaned up some error messages.
Various documentation fixes and cleanups.
Updated translations.

We need to check if the new flatpak doesn't great the interface...

EDIT: I tried the main functions install/remove/listing, it seems to work the same. So at least from this POV it's a go.

Just tried to install the flatpack steam app, looks as though it installed OK but will not start from the menu.

This thread is for the newer Flatpak in our testing repo. Questions about flatpak applications and the MX installer should be in their own threads.

For the new version of Flatpak, for me it will be interesting to have an option to use:
/home/var/lib/flatpak instead /var/lib/flatpak, because I do not want to clutter my/the root partition (see below)

The flatpak dir's are well defined.
Don't think this have been changed with version 1.0.2:

FLATPAK_USER_DIR

The location of the per-user installation. If this is not set, $XDG_DATA_HOME/flatpak echo is used.

which defaults to $HOME/.local/share/flatpak

FLATPAK_SYSTEM_DIR

The location of the default system-wide installation. If this is not set, /var/lib/flatpak is used (unless
overridden at build time by --localstatedir or --with-system-install-dir.

You need to select "For current user" within MX Package Installer" to get the flatpak's apps and runtimes installed under
your own flatpak-dir "$HOME/.locale/flatpak".

As you can see you can set both environment variables to move system- and user-dir somewhere else.
This has not changed with version 1.0.2.

... Yes, and no fehlix, if each user (for example 5) wants the same app (even few), a lot of doubloons are créated by this way, the user install way (5 X 2.8GiB). in the case above. No? (not tested)

I haven't tested yet, but you can just set system wide FLATPAK_SYSTEM_DIR to somewhere else
so the flatpak executable ( and MX Pakcage installer) know where to look for the system installed apps and runtimes.

... In fact, for only few extra app, appimage is/seems more efficient.
mx-packageinstaller needs the both registry, flatpak & appimage) ;-)
