youtube-dl [SOLVED]

#1

Post by turtlebay777 » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:06 pm

Hope this is in the right forum?

I found youtube-dl in Synaptic on MX17.1 and have downloaded it, but being a newb I can't figure out how to use it. Is there a GUI for it or can one be made for it?
This is it's home page, http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/

Thanks.

It's strictly a command-line tool, but there is a front-end to it in the repos that can download and update its own internal version of youtube-dl, called....youtube-dl-gui. We also have another program is the repo that can also download from many sites, called Clipgrab. It can monitor the clibboard and pick up video links for supported sites, then it pops up a notification. QMPlay2 also has some Youtube video playback and download capabilities.

youtube-dl is a cool tool.
Chrome, chromium, slimjet & variantes don't play well with downloading some youtube videos.
the answer is

Code: Select all

youtube-dl -k -c --geo-bypass --ignore-errors --youtube-skip-dash-manifest "$@"
and when a playlist breaks because 1 video is blocked and won't continue with the rest, run it again as follows:

Code: Select all

youtube-dl -k -c --geo-bypass --ignore-errors --no-playlist --youtube-skip-dash-manifest "$@"
and if you just want the audio,

Code: Select all

youtube-dl --no-playlist -c -x --youtube-skip-dash-manifest "$@"
Take out "--no-playlist" to get them all unless one is blocked.

Code: Select all

youtube-dl --help
gives lots more variations for different situations. :)

Youtube-dl is so handy that I use it almost every day. Except, I don't use it on YouTube at all. Lol.

Once you learn to use the command line, it downloads locked and unlocked videos from Smithsonian Channel, Discovery Channel, Science Channel, Destination America, AHC, ID, Animal Planet, Velocity, TLC, Discovery Life, most major networks, et. al. with aplomb.
It's a great tool for so much more than YouTube.
Son, someday all this will belong to your ex wife.

I am a dedicated gui user and rarely use the command line when I can avoid it.

But youtube-dl is an exception for me. The command line version is very easy to use (not much more than youtube-dl and the url of the video.

On the other hand, I have had a lot of trouble with youtubedl-gui. It seems like it rarely does what I expect it to, and I'm generally left with several files in different format which either don't play or more frequently don't have audio. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong and must have changed some kind of default settings, but I've found the command line bulletproof while the gui disagrees with me.

Just FWIW.

I have to agree with nathan2423, the terminal is so easy, I have a terminal tab open with youtube-dl at the prompt. I find a video I like, I copy and paste the url after a space into the terminal, hit enter, and it's done.
The downloaded file is in my /home directory.

Then choose which format you want to download with "-f" . Here we choose the best quality with "22" as the format option:
