MX_17 Test Repository - the TestDisk thread

Post by timkb4cq » Wed Jul 25, 2018 3:32 pm

TestDisk 7.1-WIP (a beta release) is now available in the MX-17 Test repo. Apart from from the bugfixes and additional filetypes the new version supports, I have enabled the build of the included GUI version of photorec, QPhotoRec, which Debian has disabled in their package.

TestDisk was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software: certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy. It can also undelete files from FAT, exFAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystems.

PhotoRec (included in the TestDisk package) is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.

As with any package in the Test repo, please leave feedback if you try it.
