Update Request: NixNote 2.0.2

#1 Post by Discostu » Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:04 pm

Hi,

cool that this Evernote tool is part of MX Linux. But the version is already a bit outdated and there have been several bugfixes and new features since then. Would be great if somebody could update that.

Version in MX LInux: 2.0~beta11 (2016-12-28)
Current release: 2.0.2 (2017-09-12)

Well...2.0.2 is in stretch-backports, so is easily installable using the MX Package Installer.

Thanks for your answer. Sorry, I'm quite new to this. I was under the impression that installation of packages from stretch-backports can lead to system instability and should only be done for temporary testing. If this is not the case, then I'll get it from there.

I would guess that around 99.9% of the packages in the backports repo are not going to cause any issues. After all, many of the packages we ship by default with MX are backports, too, and it's pretty darn stable.

We just don't recommend that users add the backports repo and then upgrade everything from it in one fell swoop. If they do get that one problem package in a thousand, that makes much more difficult to determine the culprit.

Nixnote is not developed any more by the original creator. But there is a fork that is currently at v. 2.1.0-Beta 3:

Maybe this could be added to the Test Repositorium?

NixNote 2.1.0

The new NixNote is now at its stable release 2.1.0. It can be installed as an AppImage but I think it would be good to also add it to the repository, replacing the older version.

There's a PPA for 2.1.0, but IMO they've made a mess of things by taking the libtidy 5.6.0 source and making their own custom html-tidy package, installed into /opt, instead of just backporting libtidy-dev 5.6.0...unless they've forked it. Let's see if I can clean things up.

Nice find. I'll give it a drive and see how it works. So far, not too bad.

The developer did mention that they wanted to get it into shape for getting it into distros, so I suggested that he change the PPA model to use a backported libtidy-5.6.0, which includes the pkg-config .pc file his build looks for. Libtidy seems to be a trivial backport, too.

Looks like we're making some progress with the dev toward getting it to build on MX with a libtidy backport: https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2/issues/20
