I get an error when launching that BABL 1.5 or greater is required and 1.46 is installed. This is MX 17.1 64 bit on an R7 AMD processor, integrated graphics with 4.16.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 kernel.
Do you have issues with thumbnails after install gimp from test repo as another user reported here:

I posted about the babl and gegl packages earlier that didn't get upgraded along.. search for the ones mentioned in the test repo, and it should sort itself out.

OK, it still looks like libgimp2.0 still isn't pulling in the latest babl and gegl versions, but the reason why it works for some and not others depends on whether you had earlier versions of those installed for the development GIMP 2.9 series, and those didn't get updated. Those installing fresh or upgrading straight from the 2.8 series don't see the issues, since the new installs of those libraries automatically get the latest.

I'm trying a rebuild that forces the new versions for realsies this time.

Thanks Stevo. The modified 2.10 Gimp from the test repo corrected the problem.

So...are the newer libglib2.0, freetype, and fontconfig libraries that it should have pulled in working alright for everyone? If so, it's time to think about moving those and the new GIMP to main.

Dumb question, but how does one tell?

PS Those two packages were not pulled in this time around, but probably were with the previous Gimp 2.10 I installed.

There'd be nothing apparent if they work correctly--"no news is good news." The system would just keep on keepin' on. Odd new crashes and font display glitches would be bad news.
