I now have Photoshop at my disposal.. and I don't feel like going back to the Gimp at all, I use it when in Linux, sure, but there are SO many things that the Gimp can't do.

Personally I think it's great for basic work, but other than that, Photoshop and InDesign for me, all the way.

Although.. to add, I am glad to see the development progression in the Gimp :)

In fairness, after using Photoshop for several years, literally on a daily basis, I can say that even another 10 years later, perhaps even more, I would never know how to use everything in Photoshop. It's just too massive of a programm with too many possibilities for the lay-person or possibly just about anyone for that matter. Having said that though, I actually find that the same is true for GIMP, especially since it's even possible to import various Photoshop tools/brushes into GIMP. For me personally, the problem was never what GIMP could or couldn't do, but rather the (sometimes) outlandish design difference, tool names that were totally different and at times even incomprehensible to me, as well as the locations for so many many different functions. At times it was truly maddening, having to learn entire script functions totally from scratch. So yeah, I get why many professional graphic designers will never leave photoshop, but I also believe if most of those very same designers never had Photoshop to begin with, more than likely they would have learned to accomplish everything that they needed with GIMP.
I did say "most of those" ... ;)

Indeed, absolutely correct, and those few that are left actually need the features that Gimp doesn't provide. ;) Good call!

I have never used anything but GIMP (along with various gadgets in ScriptFU and G'Mic). Not because it was the best tool for the job, but rather because it was the only tool I had at hand for the last 20 years. It was the hammer that made everything look like a nail. One would think I'd be really good with it by now, but it stymies me more often than my pride will confess. Mistakes are still frequent.

But I even carry a portable exe on a USB drive whenever I'm forced onto a Windows machine. Lol. No one punishes me quite like I do.
Son, someday all this will belong to your ex wife.

Just sent up a gimp-plugin-registry and gimp-gmic that should work with the new version. The "save for web" plugin is borkened with 2.10, so it's disabled.

Does it matter if it's installed from testing or from the regular repo? Both repos hold the same version number for those two packages.

I'll have to rebuild it if the main repo has the same version, since it will only work with the major release version of GIMP it was built against.

Correction: the standard version works fine, so we don't need the test repo version of gmic. It was just the plugin-registry that had trouble.

So in short: gimp-plugin-registry and gimp-gmic can be installed without enabling test?

Oh.. just tried installing without test, and gimp-plugin-registry wants to remove gimp and breaks things. Didn't follow through, of course.

Enabled test repo, tried again, this time things work out:

Code: Select all

gimp-gmic (version 1:2.0.0+zart-0.1~mx17+1) will be installed
gimp-plugin-registry (version 7.20170217-1~mx17+1) will be installed
libgtkglext1 (version 1.2.0-4) will be installed
MX-23.2_x64 July 31 2023 * 6.1.0-20-amd64 ext4 Xfce 4.18.1 * 8core AMD Ryzen 7 2700
