MX 17 Repo: Updated Mesa and xorg video drivers

#1 Post by Stevo » Wed Mar 07, 2018 2:55 pm

We have an updated Mesa 17.3.6 and backported amdgpu, nouveau, ait-radeon, and intel video drivers in a new experimental repository for MX 17. All testers should be using a sacrificial system or be prepared to restore from a backup.
Testers need to add the following experimental repo to their sources and then upgrade their free xorg driver. Optimus Nvidia driver installation currently does not work, and standard Nvidia driver installation may also be broken.

Code: Select all

deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/experimental/ stretch test

Should that be added (disabled) to the list for 17.1?
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

No, it would be too tempting, like deb-multimedia.

At least, wait until we get some test results. The upgrades may be perfectly safe, but the consequences if they aren't would kill their GUI in the worst case.

Edit: Just installed 17.1 rc in an extra 10 GB partition, so I'll see how it deals with the upgrades and the new Intel driver. No long string of boot error messages with this install, thank goodness.

Upgraded mesa and the Intel driver in the test repo, and it worked fine. Using the modesetting driver instead of Intel with TearFree still produced scrolling glitches in Firefox though. Maybe we can provide that 20-intel.conf file in MX-Tweak for those affected by the glitch. Testing repos are not necessary for the upgrade, only the experimental one.

I tried to install the 384.111 Nvidia drivers for my Optimus system with ddm-mx, but some Nvidia packages now won't install. I'll have to see what happened, but that looks like a headache.

Mesa updated to 18.0.4 with the latest va-api stack to work with my new CoffeeLake 8th-gen graphics, as well as ffmpeg, vlc, qmplay2, mpv, and kodi rebuilds to have the va-api working. I may also have to add the Nvidia drivers for those to install correctly.

Thanks to mmikeinsantarosa for doing the big test repo llvm-6.0 builds that make Mesa 18 builds possible.
