MX 17 Repository: The Mpv Thread

#1 Post by Stevo »

Mpv 0.28.0, using an internal instead of the system ffmpeg, is now available in the test repository.

Mpv is a lightweight audio and video player based on MPlayer and mplayer2. It supports a wide variety of video file formats, audio and video codecs, and subtitle types. It can also be used as the player engine in SMPlayer.

Recent changes in Youtube broke its live streams in Debian's mpv 0.26 and 0.27, and problems with Debian's newer ffmpeg prevented a build of mpv 0.28 against the system ffmpeg. So we have a workaround using the internal version of ffmpeg.

We now have returned to the upstream Debian versions again, with mpv and libmpv1 packages for version 0.29.0, now that we also have ffmpeg 4.0.2 in our test repo. We also have rebuilds of gnome-mpv and mpc-qt, which use libmpv1 as the player engine, against the new libmpv-dev, so that they'll use the new 0.29.0 and we can purge the old 0.27.0 version runtime library we were hanging onto.

Enjoy and test!

If antiX wants to backport ffmpeg on a Stretch base, it just requires dropping debhelper to 10, adding libleptonica-dev as a build-dep, then either backporting libmysofa-dev (MX already had that) or disabling the libmysofa support in the build.

We have now updated to 0.29.1 in the test repository, built against the newly backported ffmpeg 4.0.3 in the test repo. This adds support for playback of videos encoded in the hot new AV1 fully open and libre video codec, using libaom. Note that this reference version also offers encoding to the "av1" format, but currently is too slow to be practical--we need to wait for optimized versions. Players that use mpv or libmpv as a playback engine, such as with SMPlayer, Gnome-MPV, or MPC-QT, also gain that playback ability, or Vidcutter to edit AV1 videos.

VLC also gets the ability to play those if you upgrade the libav* libraries to 4.0.3.

Some sample AV1 files can be found here: https://www.elecard.com/videos

Now updated to 0.32 in the test repo. This build also enables vapoursynth so that it can be used with SVP4Linux. (versions 0.180 or older, the newer SVP needs a newer Python 3)
