MX-17 package request: RetroShare 0.6.3

#1 Post by MX-16_fan » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:46 pm

Retroshare (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RetroShare) is an advanced collaborative working and communication platform that includes a remarkable list of features (cf. https://retroshare.readthedocs.io/en/latest/#features). The most interesting feature is that it does without a central server, i.e. it should be easy to set it up. Plus it offers cross-platform availability (MS Windows, Mac OS X, Linux distributions).

I'd love to thoroughly test the current 0.6.3 version (see release notes here: https://retroshareteam.wordpress.com/20 ... or-v0-6-3/) over a longer timespan.

Code is on GitHub: https://github.com/RetroShare/RetroShare. Instructions for compilation are here: https://retroshare.readthedocs.io/en/la ... mpilation/. There are additional special hints relating to Debian Stretch here: https://retroshareteam.wordpress.com/20 ... or-v0-6-3/ -> section "Files".

I am sure that testing RetroShare would be interesting for a number of users.

Greetings, Joe

Just a note: if there already exists a repository with .deb packages and debianized source, such as in a PPA, this makes the task of porting it over to MX immensely easier. There is an official PPA for Retroshare, run by the developers.

Sorry, I forgot to do research on that. Thanks for the reminder. Greetings, Joe

Retroshare 0.6.3 is now available in both the MX 17 and MX 15/16 test repositories. Please report back with results if you give it a try.

Thanks a lot! Installs and starts nicely, GUI very responsive. All modules (functions) can be called.

Configuration very easy, by the way. Great!

I will report any issues in case I'll encounter any.

UPDATE:

Just wanted to test it in combination with the Android version available on F-Droid (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.ret ... d.qml_app/), on a friend's Fairphone 2 (which unfortunately I'll have to return very soon).

Unfortunately, inside the F-Droid app the Android version (0.6.4) is called a "prototype". App comment says that this "version is a prototype in alpha state not suitable for general use", and that you are expected to "experience bugs". So merely testing it in combination with the MX-17.1 test version probably won't tell you much about how good the desktop version is.

Has anyone had the oportunity to test the iPhone version of RetroShare in combination with the MX-17.1 test version?

Greetings, Joe
