MX 17 Repository: The Iridium-browser Thread

#1 Post by Stevo »

EDIT: Note that the standard MX and Debian kernels require that Iridium be started with

Code: Select all

dbus-launch iridium-browser --no-sandbox
You can edit the menu entry to include this. The Liquorix kernels do not require this.

64-bit users can now try the latest 2017.10 release of this Chromium fork from the test repo. It won't build on 32-bit, unfortunately, just like earlier versions.
The Iridium Browser is based on the Chromium code base. All modifications enhance the privacy of the user and make sure that the latest and best secure technologies are used. Automatic transmission of partial queries, keywords, metrics to central services is prevented and only occurs with the approval of the user. In addition, all our builds are reproducible and modifications are auditable, setting the project ahead of other secure browser providers.
Please note that there is a lag between releases of Chromium and Iridium. If you visit sketchy websites, you may be exposed to vunerabilities that are fixed in the latest Chromium releases.

I tried the Iridium browser a while back and there were a few odd glitches. I updated to 2017.10 on 2 October and have been using it since with no problems. It seems much snappier than Firefox.

Although I haven't done much personalising yet, I think this may be a permanent change for me.

My first problem with Iridium. I tried ordering a calendar from a BBC associate, so a reliable website. Processing of the card payment started and then failed with a timeout after about 5 secs. This happened with repeated attempts over 2 days. Firefox completed at the first attempt.

Otherwise, Iridium has been reliable since 2 October.

My enthusiasm for Iridium has waned. I tried another online payment yesterday, again to a supplier I have used before. The process failed at the same point - the verification stage reported timeout. Firefox again completed the transaction without problem.

Googling shows that it's a longstanding problem with Chromium, mainly affecting debit card payments, and that many solutions have been found but none work reliably. Looks like it's back to Firefox for me.

Iridium Browser has been updated to 2018.5.67 for the MX 17 test repo, 64-bit only. This version is based on Chromium 67.

We now have the 2018.11.71 release for 64-bit in the main MX 17 repository. It should appear as an upgrade if you have the older version installed.

Hey.
I've installed Iridium in my MX Linux but it never starts, no matter how many times I click the desktop icon or even in the start menu.
Could you please look into this?

Thanks.
