No initial sound after I plugged in a webcam

#1 Post by Shase »

Hi. First time poster, and a newbie to linux. So bear with me.

I have MX Linux 18.3 with KDE Plasma. I use a Steelseries Arctis 7 for sound. Before it could work with stereo, I had to change some of the Pulseaudio configfiles. All worked well until i plugged in my webcam a few days, a Logitech c922. Now when I boot and log into KDE, my computer has no sound, as in the icon for volumen shows at the taskbar, with i - after it.. The settings shows no sound devices at all. If I boot with the webcam unplugged, then the sound will work again in 2. or 3. startup attempts.

If I log in to KDE with the webcam plugged in, then I can log out, and into xfce4. Then there is sound devices again. The sound devices stays on if I then log out off xfce4 and into KDE again. While in xfce4 my volume control does not work. But it does i KDE.

I have noticed that my system some times shows "usb device fail" at startup some times after I got my webcam. But not allways.

If you want to try installing an additional kernel like Liquorix 5.2 and testing it when running that, we could rule out it being related to the kernel version.

Otherwise, we could investigate if killing and restarting pulseaudio is any help, or if any error messages show up in the boot log or dmesg when booting with it plugged in.

I think there might be a hint in my boot log since I saw the usb fail message. I have tried to copy some of it here:

Tried installing Liquorix kernel 5.2. There my computer loads the start-up screen, then says "usb 2.6.1 device load error". Then nothing more happens. It just hangs at start-up.

Well, yes, since you're using the Nvidia driver, you need to upgrade that to our patched 4.18.74 version from the test repo. You got an error message saying that the driver build failed with the new kernel install terminal word salad that flew by, but maybe you missed it.

You should be able to upgrade it by using the MX package installer, test repo tab, and search for "nvidia" and look for the upgrades to installed packages.

Ok. I would never have thought of the nvidia driver. Was sure it was an audio related problem.

I will try the test driver.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I mean that you can't get a GUI with the new 5.2 kernel until you get a version of the Nvidia video driver you're using to build on it. I don't think it has anything to do with the audio problem.
