I did a search here for "Software index is broken" and find I've got the same problem that towwire has/had: see bit.ly/1UAfXHG . In order to make long distance US calls, I usually use the VoIP at Gmail. To use that Gmail feature, one has to install the google-talkplugin from Google. I've been using the Gmail VoIP for years and never had a problem installing it. From Google, we have to pick and install the 32 or 64 bit ".deb (For
Debian/Ubuntu)". Until early today, I had xfce as my DE but then decided to erase my HDD (using nwipe). Then I used the MX-15_64-KDE-added.iso kindly prepared by Stevo to switch back to KDE because I've been using KDE since I started years ago with MEPIS as my sole OS. When I did have xfce installed (installed on the recent Xmas Day), I downloaded that Google-provided .deb and had no trouble with the Gmail VoIP, but now with KDE, I have the problem that I can't install that .deb so I figure this problem surely or probably is somehow connected with KDE.
When I try to use any of the three different gdebi's that I have to install the Google-provided .deb google-talkplugin, none work. I get this error:
"Software index is broken
This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for
broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the
file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo
apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'."
I did the above checks and runs and still have the problem. Also, nothing's found broken in synaptic.
If it's safe to do, can I do what towwire did except install the google-talkplugin deb by running the following or will something break? Do this:
Code: Select all
dpkg -i google-talkplugin_current_amd64.deb
[This same kind of problem occurs when I tried to install skype from the skype website. Therefore, I have no skype.]
What to do?
My sole OS: MX-15 (64 bit) with KDE as desktop
