MX-14 with KDE Showcase and Tutorial screencast

#1 Post by m_pav »

Please take a look at this screencast video I put together. It's 41 minutes long, so you may have to put aside some time to watch it, but it has a distinct change at around 20 minutes in which moves to package management etc. Hint, it is partially targeted towards Windows users.

It may not qualify for inclusion into the MX videos section, but it should prove useful for some at the very least.

Starting with the regular XFCE 4.10 Desktop, we take a look at a modified MX-14 installation that has the KDE 4.8.4 Desktop installed and configured.
We show how a user can choose which desktop type they want to log in to, then move into the Dolphin file manager and its split screen view capabilities, changing the menu look and style and finally the KDE activities. We concentrate on 2 activities, the first a traditional desktop using folder view and the second, a Search and Launch activity plus some simple customisation options for the menus on both before spending 5 minutes on productivity applications.

Around 20 minutes in, we change to downloading and installing programs outside of the common Linux repositories then move into using Synaptic for package management where we upgrade one, then showcase 3 of the MX utilities, MX-Codecs Installer, MX-Flash Manager and the MX-Package Installer to enhance web usage by means of adding or updating plugins.
Overall, this is a showcase and a tutorial to cover some of the most frequently asked questions we see from new users, or those coming across from Windows.

We hope you enjoy this 40 minute screencast.

I keep getting a server error message. Any clues as to why?

At the very least we can include it in the KDE Doc, possibly in the main collection as well.

This is a very nice video showcase, showing different desktops and their features running on the same OS. I think the video would make a nice addition to the MX video library.
MX-14; 3.12-0.bpo.1-686-pae kernel using 4GB RAM
2.4GHz AMD Athlon 4600+
NVidia GeForce 6150 LE; 304.121 Display Driver
You didn't slow down because you're old; you're old because you slowed down.
