Libqt5printsupport5

#1 Post by tianlan » Sat Jun 03, 2017 6:45 am

Would it be possible to upgrade Libqt5printsupport5.
I have an Epson Stylus Office Tx300F series and can't access it's properties.
The printer properties are available in LinuxMint with Libqt5printsupport5 - Qt 5 print support module – 5.5.1+dfsg-16ubuntu7

Greetings
TianLan

I looked at it. Unfortunately, that library cannot be built in isolation. It's part of qt-core which means that the whole Qt stack would have to be upgraded.
While that's not impossible, to maintain stability core libraries such as Gtk, libc, & Qt are not usually considered upgradeable for a particular distro base version. When MX-17 comes out it should be using Qt 5.7.1 but it's not really practical to port that to MX-16.

I did do an experimental Qt 5.5 build in an OBS repo and upgraded to it. Everything was OK, except it broke any programs that used the private QT 5 ABIs and thus were tied to Qt 5.3. The only one of those I could find right off was Calibre, and that problem was solved by rebuilding it against 5.5, but I didn't know how many more would pop up like that. Then I broke the repo by trying to build 5.6 in it. :p

I think I know how to avoid breaking it now, and might even be able to build Stretch's Qt 5 in it. After all, NeptuneOS has done it on a Wheezy base.

I'm fixing the Qt 5.5.1 in the OBS repo... it worked well in the limited testing I did with it, and I was able to downgrade back to the standard Qt 5.3.2 with aptitude after I was done testing, but of course you should make a backup or snapshot of your system before trying it yourself. I'll let you know when the repo has finished rebuilding its packages.

So, I got the 5.5.1 backport repo back up, and even got a newer qtcreator 4.0 built in it: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show ... t5-default

https://software.opensuse.org//download ... kage=qt5ct

But it's experimental...I could try and add programs that need to be rebuilt against a this Qt 5 version, but I'll need to know about them. Qtcreator and Calibre are the only ones I know of at the moment.

Thank you, I will try it, and if it doesn't work I will go back to my snapshot and wait for mx-17.

The upgrade worked, the system seems to be fine, I didn't experience any problems.

But maybe I requested the wrong package or I missed something, because I still cannot open the properties (see #5 of Printer settings - print quality viewtopic.php?p=415282#p415282)
I thought it was due to Libqt5printsupport5, but maybe it is due to system-config-printer 1.4.6-1.1 a newer version is system-config-printer 1.5.7

Sorry for maybe being mistaken.
Is it also possible to update system-config-printer?

and
where can I find your tea kitty?

I can answer the easy bit - there's a 'Donate' button at the top of the Forum, next to Wiki.

Hmmm--there's also an updated cups in the test repository. I'll check out the system-config-printer update---maybe some combination of those could get your printer working.
