MX 15/16 Repository: The adobe-flashplugin Thread

#1 Post by Stevo » Fri May 26, 2017 7:54 pm

We have received permission from Adobe to distribute their Flash plugin binaries, so we can emulate Ubuntu and package both the older NPAPI Flash and the newer Chromium-type Pepperflash in one package, and keep that up with the frequent updates. This means that the Flash installer packages and MX-Flash are being superceded. Installing adobe-flashplugin will remove the installer packages (so long, and thanks for all the Flash! :p)

There are also adobe-flash-properties-gtk and -kde packages for setting some Flash configurations in a GUI, your choice.

Yes, I noticed when it didn't work on mlb.com this morning in Firefox. The updated packages for MX 15 have been sent to Tim, and I'm finishing up packages for M12/MX 14 this time, too.

Here are the MX 15/16 packages if you want to get it working right away--you will also need to update the gtk or KDE Flash properties packages if those are installed--the gtk one is installed by default in MX 16.1, so use dpkg to install both the Flash and properties packages at once if that's the situation.

Updated to 20170711.1 in the main repos for 15/16 and M12/MX 14 users. This provides the updates to 26.0.0.137 for NPAPI and PPAPI (pepper) Flash.

I noticed some Adobe updates very recently, during a routine Synaptic update. I tend to look at the details of updates, to see if things like FF are being updated, or mx apps, or the installer, or other familiar things like that.

I assume MX-16.1 flash support is simply provided via the new Adobe Flash packages [mentioned in the OP], and that it is now a routine update like other system and application packages (this is my simple summary and understanding).

I gather additional flash support can be added, although without Flash Manager, this process would be a little unclear. My previous MX-16 install does contain the legacy Flash Manager in MX Tools....

...I'd consult the forum threads and other notes if I thought I might need alternative flash packages, guessing Package Manager stable or test repos might have something in the first instance. That said, I see no website issues here to prompt me to seek additional flash packages or consider how the system would use them.

*Adobe Flash Player does have a Check Now under Updates on the Advanced tab and it did indeed confirm I was up-to-date via a browser window.

That is correct. It is now a deb package in the repos that Stevo is maintaining and will come through as a regular upgrade.

.
The adobe packages in our repo supply both firefox style plugins and the Pepperflash plugins for chromium chromium based browsers.

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to post this, but the latest adobe-flashplugin package in 32-bit (1:20170711.1-1mx15+2), presents a hard dependency from virtualbox-guest-x11!

Possibly a problem similar to the one previously recorded on this other thread (beginning at #8) ...

Again? I keep purging that from the virtual machine, and it keeps getting back in somehow. I'll fix it.
