MX 15/16 Repository: The Xreader Thread

#1 Postby Stevo » Mon Apr 17, 2017 4:31 pm

We now have version 1.2.2 in the test repository.

Xreader is a simple, GTK-based multi-page document viewer. It can display and print postscript (PS), encapsulated postscript (EPS), djvu, dvi and portable document format (PDF) files. When supported by the document, it also allows searching for text, copying text to the clipboard, hypertext navigation, and table-of-contents bookmarks.

I was prompted to add it after reading this thread in the xfce forums: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=11471
Perhaps it's better than qpdfview: we should discuss whether this should replace it.

Though I also like Master PDF Editor--it's freeware and has more features, but it's still proprietary. :frown:

It is fast and easy to use. Only issue so far is that xreader is not listed in the index and cannot place an icon on the desktop -now off to town will look again later.

Edit. Found it. Lists as Document Viewer.

Good add. I immediately replaced qpdfview with Atril. I'll now go with Xreader, which is a fork from Atril but DE agnostic and doesn't pull in a bunch of Mate dependencies. I've compared a few and haven't found a pdf viewer that's worked better than Atril/Xreader, so I vote that as a gtk app yes it should replace qpdfviewer as default.

Yep, agree. Spent more time with it, Certainly better than qpfview and will probably now delete Okular - with all it's dependencies - and use xreader as the default.

Ditto. Looks a lot better than qpfview.

For just viewing it seems fine, but qpdfview has many other functions that I need and use all the time. I would not support making it the default.
Production: 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, MX-15 RC1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 3.16-0-4-686-pae. MX-15, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB
