MX 15/16 Repository: The Apulse Thread

#1 Post by Stevo » Tue Mar 21, 2017 12:56 am

We now have a new apulse-0.1.9 package in our test repository. Apulse basically will fool a program that demands pulseaudio, such as the new releases of Firefox, into using the ALSA sound system instead.

MX already ships with pulseaudio preinstalled, but this gives users that don't like it a choice. The project had been in stasis for a couple of years, since it achieved its goal of getting Skype 4.3 to use alsa, but now is back in active development with Firefox's demands for pulseaudio.

We now have a new apulse-0.1.10 in the test repository, as well as in MX 17's test repo. I found a better version to copy in a Debian maintainer's private repo that better follows Debian policy in packaging it, so this installs a libapulse package as well. I added some conflicts so it hopefully upgrades gracefully over our previous 0.1.9 single deb build.

Apparently with Firefox 57, you must now modify a setting in about:config for apulse to keep working: https://github.com/i-rinat/apulse/issue ... -344810073

I have two audio devices.

Code: Select all

cat /proc/asound/modules
0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_virtuoso
It seems that making second one (snd_virtuoso) default with mx-select-sound does not affect apulse.
I had an issue running apulse firefox

Code: Select all

[apulse] [error] do_connect_pcm: can't open playback device "default". Error code -2 (No such file or directory)
[apulse] [error] do_connect_pcm: failed to open ALSA device. Apulse does no resampling or format conversion, leaving that task to ALSA plugins. Ensure that selected device is capable of playing a particular sample format at a particular rate. They have to be supported by either hardware directly, or by "plug" and "dmix" ALSA plugins which will perform required conversions on CPU.
So I made snd_hda_intel blacklisted to leave no options for apulse either.
apulse - updated from test repo. FF- 57. mx17b2x64.
