MX 15/16 Repository: The torbrowser-launcher Thread

#1 Postby v3g4n » Sat Apr 23, 2016 8:42 pm

torbrowser-launcher_0.2.4 is now available in the test repo.
Tor Browser Launcher is intended to make Tor Browser easier to install and use for GNU/Linux users. You install torbrowser-launcher from your distribution's package manager and it handles everything else:
Downloads and installs the most recent version of Tor Browser in your language and for your computer's architecture, or launches Tor Browser if it's already installed (Tor Browser will automatically update itself)
Verifies Tor Browser's signature for you, to ensure the version you downloaded was cryptographically signed by Tor developers and was not tampered with
Adds "Tor Browser" and "Tor Browser Launcher Settings" application launcher to your desktop environment's menu
Includes AppArmor profiles to make a Tor Browser compromise not as bad
Optionally plays a modem sound when you open Tor Browser (because Tor is so slow)

I am trying to install this and I keep getting an error that the download failed because I may be under attack. At that point my only option is to cancel or download again. I've been doing that over and over on two computers, each time with the same result. Does anyone have any tips to get around this? (The next time it happens I will copy and paste the exact error message.) The exact message is: "SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED! You might be under attack, or there might be just a networking problem. Click start to try the download again."

Update: I see this: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=131377 which indicates that the tarball should be downloaded directly. Ok I may try that, but if that's necessary then the torbrowser install file in the repo isn't working ?

Thanks, I tested the version from the test repo and the version available in backports and neither seem to be working currently.

Thanks for testing v3g4n! It is always good to know that the problem is not in my local setup.

I followed the instructions & downloaded TorBrowser for no reason other than I was curious.
I used root Thunar and unarchived it in the download folder.
I used root Thunar to move it (I actually copied it) to /opt
Then I clicked on Setup TorBrowser and it complained that I should not be in root.
I tried in File Manager and it complained a lack of permissions.
I right-clicked and used Change Ownership to User.
Then I opened the folder & used Change Ownership to user directly on Setup TorBrowser.
TorBrowser turned an interesting shade of green & when I clicked on it the setup worked.
Just a FYI ... not sure why I'd need a slower browser, but there it is.
HTH ...
Custom-built PC w/i7 CPU. Dual boot MX-16 & a MS version of windows (never expect to use MS).
Brother HL-2275DW printer connected to the router (MX-16 doesn't connect to it).
