MX 15 Repository: The Scribus Thread.

#1 Post by Stevo » Thu Feb 11, 2016 8:32 pm

We now have the latest stable Scribus 1.4.6 desktop publishing application in the test repository.
Most Important Changes

Scribus 1.4.6 finally supports SVG blend modes.
Improvements to Scribus’s PDF export.
Improvements to hyphenation.
Translation and documentation updates.
As of version 1.4.6, Scribus includes four new color palettes, namely CIE LAB and CIE HLC, both of which are available in a CMYK and an sRGB version. They refer to affordable color fans that use an open and non-proprietary color model.
As with all programs in the test repository, we appreciate any feedback about how the program installs and performs. Thanks!

Installs and runs fine.
Since I only produce a free newsletter with it I do not get into using colors much at all.
I have not used it very much yet.

Thanks again for making it available.

I also have the source files for scribus-ng 1.5.0, so I may try that build. I'm pretty sure both versions can be installed at once.

From the Scribus list it looks like they are working hard on getting a 1.5.1 release out.
I have no idea when, as they only have 2 to 3 developers.
But I get the idea they want to get that one out ASAP.

It looks like the two version's file formats are incompatible, so you can't open a document in 1.4.X once you've opened it in 1.5.X...just something to keep in mind.

It's interesting that you cannot print directly to a normal desktop printer, but have to export to PDF and then print from somewhere else.

I was previously unaware of that feature.

As far as printing goes. It has always been that way. At least as long as I have used it.

As far as new files not working in old Scribus versions that has been true of most versions.
New versions new features means no compatibility with old versions.

Some people want to run the latest and greatest version. I have always been perfectly happy with the stable version.

I abandoned Scribus because of compatibility issues. Now use Lyx which has a bigger learning curve
but produces good print-ready copy.

Can anyone who is using Scribus tell me if the "print preview" feature is working for them? I just started using Scribus and I think it is going to do what I want very well, but when I try the "print preview" all I get is a grey (blank) box with no content. Can someone confirm that this is working for them? thanks!

The print preview is there to check if there are any errors prior to exporting your file to .pdf for printing.
So the first thing you usually see is if there is anything that you need to fix.
Once you have fixed any errors you can see what the document looks like.
I have not used it for awhile but I suggest you try the Scribus mailing list where both users and developers hang out.
You will get the best help there. There is also a wiki.
Better to ask experienced Scribus users than here.
Here is where to subscribe to the mailing list: http://lists.scribus.net/mailman/listinfo/scribus
Good luck.
