What is the difference between the liquorix kernel versions and the antiX ones? While only the 4.9.17 version is available within MX Package Installed, I see that in Synaptic Package Manager the antiX 4.10 kernel is available. Would there be any harm in installing that instead of waiting for the liquorix version?

The Liquorix kernel has the Zen patchset, which has quite a few custom changes from a generic Linux or Debian kernel. Most are intended to increase performance on a single user's desktop. The AntiX kernel also has custom patches, but the only I one I know for sure allows for graphics in the framebuffer during the boot sequence.

I suppose we could ask "why the delay" on the Liquorix forums. Usually damentz waits until the .1 kernel release is out before creating a Liquorix version, but that's been out a while, too.

Thanks for the reply but I'd still like to know it there would be any harm in using the antiX kernel. I think that it would be possible to switch from the antiX kernel back to the liquorix one if desired. In other words, I could go back and forth between them if one offered a higher stable version than the other. Is that right? Would there be any consequences? I am just a regular computer user but I like to have the latest stable kernel installed on my computer. Thanks for any further information you (or anyone else) can give to me.

There should not be any problems with having both the AntiX and Liquorix kernels installed at the same time, though I don't know if anyone has tested the 4.10 kernel with any of the proprietary drivers to see if they will build against it--fglrx, Nvidia, broadcom-sta, and ndiswrapper come to mind.

broadcom-sta and ndiswrapper build okay

Code: Select all

$ dkms status

broadcom-sta, 6.30.223.271, 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, x86_64: installed
ndiswrapper, 1.60, 4.10.1-antix.1-amd64-smp, x86_64: installed
ndiswrapper, 1.60, 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, x86_64: installed
virtualbox-guest, 5.1.14, 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, x86_64: installed

virtualbox-guest fails during build for 4.10.1-antix.1-amd64-smp kernel

Code: Select all

Building module:
cleaning build area....
make KERNELRELEASE=4.10.1-antix.1-amd64-smp -C /lib/modules/4.10.1-antix.1-amd64-smp/build M=/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-guest/5.1.14/build..................................(bad exit status: 2)
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.10.1-antix.1-amd64-smp (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-guest/5.1.14/build/make.log for more information.

Haven't tried fglrx or nvidia.

Yes, I think I saw that the 5.1.18 release added support for the 4.10 kernel--I'll check if that's in upstream Debian yet.

I am eagerly awaiting the 4.11. This one has support for a lot of the new Ryzen motherboards (chips set stuff like audio and network chips).

When this available, I can pull the trigger on the first new rig since 2012 !
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 MB
AMD FX8320 3.5 GHz octo-core
16 Gig DDR3 1600 (Crucial)
Nvidia -ASUS 210 fanless
OCZ Vertex4 128G SSD (sda1,2, and 3=MX-16) sda4=MX-16 RC_1
2TB WD sdb1= data
on-board ethernet & sound

Thanks to everyone for the information. I am going to install the antiX kernel 4.10 until such time as a liquorix version becomes available. I do not use virtualbox-guest so its failure does not matter to me. I would just like to have the latest available kernel version installed. (I am anxiously awaiting 5.0!) Thanks again.

The Liquorix kernel was updated to 4.9-18 yesterday, so the developer is still active. There may be a lot of work involved in adapting the Zen patches to the 4.10 kernel.

4.9-18 is now available in the test repo.
If you require the use of broadcom-sta, ndiswrapper, fglrx or nvidia-driver you will need to upgrade/install the versions from the test repo. If you do not do this your older drivers will fail to compile.
linux-liquorix (4.9-18) unstable; urgency=medium

* merge 4.9.16
* merge 4.9.17-rc for 2017-03-18
* update CFS ondemand tunables
- set MICRO_FREQUENCY_UP_THRESHOLD from 95 to 85
- set MIN_FREQUENCY_UP_THRESHOLD from 11 to 6
* merge latest BFQ updates
* update version to 16.1
