Firefox browser FAIL MEPIS 12

#1 Post by eemaestro » Thu Jan 28, 2016 12:22 pm

This morning I did an #apt-get update & apt-get upgrade. I saw that Firefox
was being updated.
I'm sorry I did.
Some change made to yahoo.com changed the display of text. Now when
click on a story on the main page to read it, I get a new frame that is com-
pletely blank at
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/stan ... 00631.html
As a sanity check, I cut & pasted the URL into Opera. It displayed perfectly
both images and text.
My Firefox is 43.0.4. The viewport's help submenu displays

Code: Select all

43.0.4
Updates will come through package manager
MXLinux-15
Now am wondering if apt could have picked up binaries for MX rather than for MEPIS 12?
When I click Check for updates button, The Oracle recommends using synaptic for updates.
So I am going to try updating Firefox w/ synaptic without changing anything else & see if that fixes it.

I specifically re-installed Firefox w/ synaptic. The version no. under Help...About Firefox incremented to 44.0.
It still does not properly display stories on yahoo.com when I click the hypertext link from the home page, just a blank viewport. However, when I copy & paste the URL from Opera into Firefox, the story is displayed properly. Hence, I conclude the problem is an HTML error or error w/ functions embedded in the HTML on yahoo.com. False alarm.

The latest firefox is 44.0 and it comes from the main repository.
We lost the mepis/mirrorcatalog sources so you need to disable

Code: Select all

http://mepis.mirrorcatalogs.com/packages/mepis/ mepis-12.0 main
ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/ mepis-12.0 main
and add this one.

Code: Select all

http://nl.mxrepo.com/mepis mepis-12.0 main
enable it and reload.

These 2 mepis related sources are still valid

Code: Select all

http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/ mepis12cr main non-free
http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo/ mepis12cr test

Firefox for my MX-14 install updated this morning (via the apt-notifier) from 43.0.4 to 44.0.

I've also noticed some changes at https://www.yahoo.com, though I think it might just be a coincidence and not related to the browser update.

I can still read things there okay but it looks different than what I usually see (like it's been set to appear as the mobile version or something). So far it just seems to be the toplevel yahoo.com page that's affected, other yahoo pages I go to like finance.yahoo.com or news.yahoo.com appear to be unchanged.

Usually I can test if the site is presenting differently by using a User Agent spoofer extension to pretend I'm using an older Firefox.

Not sure if this is related, but I've been getting that change in the Yahoo page. When I clear the Yahoo cookie, it goes back to normal.

How do you clear the Yahoo cookie?

Maybe search for yahoo cookie. You could try with - catfish. If you
find it just rename it. After that close and reopen browser.
