mplayer test string

Anybody have a command line string to test mplayer... say for a movie file named DSCF0575.MP4?

I tried several combinations and just got iterating text in the terminal. I'll just try some more.

Mplayer tries to use the "xv" video output by default, which the VBox driver does not supply:

 no adaptors present
Kodi 14.2 now starts its GUI up in my VBox install, though--I have 3d effects enabled for the guest.
