MEPIS12 won't boot normally

#1 Post by eemaestro » Sat Jan 24, 2015 5:31 pm

MEPIS12 won't boot normally. Four times I tried. Four times I got the blue desktop, but no login dialog box.
This is really strange, because I shut down normally with no apparent problem.
Am running from MEPIS12 LiveDVD. How do I troubleshoot from the LiveDVD?

While someone else chimes in, is your MEPIS partition full by any chance? If so, you may use your liveDVD to delete some stuff.

No, last time I checked it was less than 1 percent full.

If you are getting to the GRUB boot screen you might see if you can get to init 3. Login as root there (at the Linux Console) and see if you can startx to get to the Desktop.
If you can you can try an update-grub to see if it fixes your boot.

If you had installed either the nvidia or fglrx driver, the relatively recent xserver-xorg update may have messed up your video driver as it did in one of my machines. I had to use sgfxi to revert to the xorg driver before I could do anything else.

I rebooted and looked under GRUB's advanced linux settings I didn't see init 3, but saw something....(recover_mode), so I tried that. It booted to a terminal shell, after displaying the following:

Code: Select all

[ 8.785938] EXT4-fs (sda1): re-mounted. Opts:(null)
[...]Checking root file system...fsck from util-linux 2.20.1

(or type Control-D to continue):
I then typed in root password and enter. That got me to the root prompt.
Then I gave the command to do an fsck. Oh good, maybe I can fix this afterall.

Code: Select all

root@mepis1:~# ls

#fsck /dev/sda1
And answered y to all fix? prompts.

I'm glad the instructions in this mode were so detailed.
Problem solved. I also ran my backup scripts to backup my hard drive.
Thanks, lucky9, for guiding me in the right direction.

It could have easily have been the video. However it's probably a better idea to run e2fsck from the booted LiveDisk. But alls well that ends well.

Recovery mode seems to work well, I'm used to init 3. You just (at the GRUB boot screen) arrow down to the entry you want to boot and then type in 3 (or init 3) and hit the Enter key.

Once again, MEPIS 12 won't boot properly.

When the blue & white progress bar completes (takes way too long, minutes rather than seconds), the screen stays constant. No user login dialog box appears. Nor does a shell prompt.

My objective is to restore MEPIS 12 (the only OS installed on my hard drive /dev/sda1
to the point where it will once again boot from the hard drive when I remove the medium from the DVD writer.

I am typing these words from MX 15 (Fusion) 64 bit LiveDVD. I can get a shell to my hard drive at /media/demo/99353bf0-65d0-4e1b-9aaf-31ccfdd2e516/home/username/
I was thinking of running fsck but cannot log into MEPIS12 root running from the LiveDVD.

Any other ideas?

It's been a long time since I booted a M12 install, but I think if you press the Esc key as soon as it starts booting, that it will cancel the Plymouth splash screen and maybe allow you to see what's happening.

I got some console text after doing that, but nothing showing the boot sequence. And no character I pressed on the keyboard was displayed on the screen.
