MXPI
Where does that fit in?
I have used that many times, always successful. Very simple to do. For me doing it in synaptic is harder.
Sometimes the kernel you want may not be in there, so I would like to see even more put on the list for MXPI
But if it is in the list in MXPI, then it will take care of video driver (It usually makes some nvidia module for my boxen).
Then as root update-grub, and reboot, at the grub, choose the advanced options, and their kernels (including the newly installed) will be listed for your selection.
And the old ones in case the new ones don't work.

The mhwd-kernel app' has a section all of its own in their wiki:
https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?titl ... ro_Kernels
All in all powerful stuff. It keeps on evolving & is primarily the handiwork of Phil Meuler (philm) who's been the main man behind Manjaro for some years now, since the originator got too busy to put any time in (long ago).
Some years ago I wrote a bash (with a tiny bit of python) script for doing all that you can do with mhwd-kernel:

Re: Dedicated application for kernel installation/upgrades
I'm a Linux scripting puppy, & will be of no help in this endeavor, I'm sorry to say. I'm now past having the enthusiasm to put my head down & learn more stuff. I'm having a LOT of trouble trying to remember (consistently failing at it) what I did know (that was learned by putting my head down to learn more stuff... lol - you have to laugh).
What I can say, is that such a project as bringing the likes of Manjaro's MHWD (hardware &/or kernel) into MX, IS a MAJOR project. It will require someone, or, a totally dedicated team of people who are willing to put in a great deal of time to make it happen & then "IT" must be maintained so as to always be stable. The stability is crucial. Stability really should be easier in MX than it is in a rolling release based distro. So that's a benefit in MX's favor.
I take my hat of to philm, who has done this now for all of the years that Manjaro has existed (I believe). Which is a marvelous expression of skill, talent & dedication as far as I'm concerned.
So, whoever takes this one on, really needs to know just how big of a bite of the cookie they can actually chew. &, one way or another, be prepared to keep on chewing it...

Re: Dedicated application for kernel installation/upgrades
The MHWD associated source will be open, so that is certainly something to look at. It is where I would start.
I would think that you would go through that code & pull out what can be used & discard the rest.

Thanks for the info it was just and idea, I really don't think a lot users of MX are that into updating kernels anyway maybe a few more antiX users, which is a good thing really.handy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 01, 2019 3:16 am I'm a Linux scripting puppy, & will be of no help in this endeavor, I'm sorry to say. KoO, sorry for not defining the acronym, I have seen it here a few times recently,
Yes, the MX Package Installer, one of the great tools, There are over 10 4.19 antix kernels available in the stable repo, and even a 4.20 !

Re: Dedicated application for kernel installation/upgrades
I had to abandon antix-4.20.0 64-bit as well. It had fatal VirtualBox failures.

Re: Dedicated application for kernel installation/upgrades
You need to use virtualbox6 with any 4.20 kernel.
I'm running VBox6 with an antiX-4.20 kernel.
Code: Select all
uname -a
Linux antix1 4.20.6-antix.2-amd64-smp #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 1 11:42:19 EET 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux
