Firefox 20.0.1 will not load some sites

#1 Post by ptlivestock » Sat Aug 08, 2015 4:53 pm

In the last month I have noticed some sites that I wish to go to say from Google search links, and links off other pages, will not go through. I am using Firefox 29.0.1 on Mepis 11

I am not sure if this is related to Firefox or to my ISP. My ISP connection is via a Nano Station Link from my house into the broadband system and is a relatively new innovation here with the link not being perfect at times of rain and wind. However, it seems most of my normal sites work properly eg Yahoo Groups, Facebook, Flickr, Google image search and the like.

Can anyone comment on this peculiarity as Im sure I haven't altered and settings on Firefox. I have to determine where the problem lies and then possibly discuss the matter with my ISP technicians if it is the Nano link

Regards
Peter

Don't know if this is the reason for your problem, but your M11 should have FF 39.0.3 (from the community repo.) by now.
Do you not use the community repo?

Sorry that should read 29.0.1 Its 29.0.1~mozillabinaries-1mcr110+1 which Im told in synaptic is the latest available version. Perhaps do I need to set Synaptic for a different repo and if so which?

With Mepis 11, to get it to see the CR firefox package as a upgrade, I think you might need to go in to Synaptic's preferences (Settings -> Preferences) and choose "mepis" as the prefered distro instead of using the "Always prefer highest version" setting.

The way Warren set up the pinning in M11 has something to do with it.

The latest Firefox package always used to be in the testrepo CR, and we recommended that people disable that repo after installing.
But some time in the last year Tim/Stevo started putting the current Firefox package in the main CR repo bypassing the testrepo.
Is the main CR repo enabled in the sources?

Btw I'm getting ready to check this in a M11 vbox live session, so hang on.

Sorry, but I have to ask: did you reload after changing that?

Wait for kmathern, but recognize that if all else fails, you can always download the blob from here:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Directions for how to set that up are in the Mepis Wiki: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Firefox
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

I don't think the problem is related to the version of Firefox the OP uses, or to Firefox at all for that matter. It might be a failure of the ISP's default DNS servers to resolve the URLs being requested when you click on search links.

First, in order to rule out Firefox as the culprit, try using a different web browser. If that doesn't work, then try changing your DNS servers (this will require a reboot). There are instructions in the MX Wiki for changing your DNS servers:

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/wiki/netw ... static-dns

The above instructions should also apply to MEPIS 11. I'd suggest trying either Google (8.8.4.4, 8.8.8.8 ) or OpenDNS (08.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220).
