Thank you folks! I finally got my EPSON Artisan 730 to print after 4 years of pounding my head on the brick wall.

Yes, that helped, LnoyBoy
I read "Stopped - Unable to send data to printer." in the
dialog box next to Printer State.
I found another tab "Policies" and found another
dialog box with a checkbox for "Enabled" blank.
I clicked the checkbox and printing resumed.
NOTE TO SELF: Check "Properties" under System...Print settings
to make sure printer is "Enabled".

Thank you for helping.
So I printed a 1-page document. When I feel a little braver (soon I hope) I will try printing a multi-page document.

YAY!, Shay2

I tried to print a nine-page document. The paper keeps jamming starting on page 2. Maybe I should get the old paper that worked. I have thrown out about half this Hammermill paper I've put into this printer because it jammed.

Some printers are picky that way.

CUPS failure -- can't be good, eh?
Now maybe my laser printer won't even print one page....let's give it a whirl, I thought.

My printer (the SAME one I complained about not printing more than one page in post #23 above)
was powered on. So I decided to print a openoffice document file to see if my printer failed too.
I chose a 5-page document with six graphics images. I did not bother to restart my computer or
even to log out.

After verifying my laser printer options were still set to "duplex -- long side", I saved the file and then
pressed the PRINT button.

CUPS printed the 5-page document with no error.

WOW! Awesome! Is it too soon to celebrate ? Does this mean I don't have to replace
my 12-year old laser printer after all ? Man, I sure hope so.

Re: Laser printer constipated - SOLVED

#26 Post by eemaestro » Mon May 08, 2017 12:49 pm

Today, May 8, CUPS no longer prints on my laser printer. Nor does "Print Test Page" button under K->System->Print settings....R click printer icon....Properties. (Yes, the printer is "Enabled" under this menu. Yes, the documents still show up as "pending" in the "Document Print Status" viewport for this printer when I press the PRINT button from the application.) Since I had the audacity last night of trying to print a 2-page pdf from okular, nothing prints anymore. The printer still shows up under $lsusb. It's still there, it just doesn't work. Yes, it's plugged in, paper tray filled, paper pathway unclogged, ready-LED illuminated, etc.

What caused it (CUPS/laser printer) to suddenly work yesterday for one document, and then just as suddenly stop working again? Strange.

My printer's firmware locks up on a PDF if the number of pages isn't specified.
For some unknown reason, I've only found this in 2-page PDF files.

Wondering if reinstalling the printer driver from MX16_KDE_added_March_2017.iso might solve the problem.

The laser printer/Cups problem is here too, usually there have been two printers connected, the mono laser and an elderly HP Deskjet for the rare occasion when I needed color. Few weeks ago, the laser just stopped printing even though enabled, and test indications are OK. Because there has been very little printing to do, and the HP still works, I have not tried to find the problem, but suspicious of cables and connectors. After reading the recent posts in this thread, I'm now inspired to try fixit.

Will report progress - even if there is none.
Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
Primary OS : MX-17.1 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.

I would appreciate that, Gordon. The MX16_KDE_added_March_2017.iso did not print. I saved an open document (libreoffice) file onto a USB stick. I will try printing it with a couple more live DVD's. If I make any progress, I will report it. If anybody knows how to reinstall CUPS from an online repo., please let me know and I'll try that too.
