Custom Thunar action to open DVD video folder with SMPlayer?

#1

Post by paul1149 » Sun Aug 11, 2019 2:39 pm

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to open the "VIDEO_TS" folder from a ripped DVD. in SMPlayer. It can be done internally in SMPlayer via the "DVD from folder" command, but it's much easier to navigate in Thunar.

I came across this page, which gives this command for MPlayer,

Code: Select all

The MPlayer command to play a DVD device (directores, iso files, or disks):

$ mplayer dvdnav:// -mouse-movements -dvd-device \
/path/to/dvd/directory-or-iso-or-disk
but I haven't been able to adapt it to Thunar and SMPlayer.

Thanks for looking.

Perhaps this, from the SMPlayer FAQ, will help you to figure this out:
Q. What's the difference between SMPlayer and MPlayer?

They are two different applications that work together. SMPlayer actually is not a media player... MPlayer is. MPlayer is a command-line application, it doesn't have menus or buttons. It is controlled by the keyboard. As this is not very user friendly, several graphical interfaces have been developed, and SMPlayer is one of them. So MPlayer is the playback engine, SMPlayer adds the buttons, menus, dialogs, and so on. The Windows packages already include a MPlayer build along with SMPlayer.
And here's the SMPlayer man page:
https://linux.die.net/man/1/smplayer

The trick will be to come up with a command-line that launches SMPlayer then tells it to pass control to mplayer with that command sequence to play the DVD, hopefully still surrounded by the SMPlayer GUI wrapper. Good luck.

lol - It will take a miracle more than luck for me to figure that out, but thanks for the man page. Maybe I can work something from it. I suppose the thing to do is work from the command line, and then try to transfer it to Thunar.

Perhaps you might use VLC to open a VIDEO_TS folder like this working Thunar Custom Action with VLC:

Code: Select all

<action>
        <icon>vlc</icon>
        <name>Open with VLC</name>
        <unique-id>1565817491387441-2</unique-id>
        <command>vlc %d</command>
        <description>Open VIDEO_TS folder with VLC </description>
        <patterns>VIDEO_TS</patterns>
        <directories/>
</action>

Thanks, Fehlix. I'll definitely hold onto that for possible future use. The problem here is that VLC has major stutter when in full-screen mode. It's possibly due to the nVidia driver, or C2D processor, I'm not sure, but I've tried everything to eliminate it, to no effect. SMPlayer works far better, so I've shifted most of my use over to it, especially videos I intend to watch full-screen.
