Linux Mint X-apps naming

#1 Post by dreamer »

Having seen a few MATE apps regress after being ported to GTK3 I was skeptical about Linux Mint X-apps. I installed Xviewer and Xreader from test repo and I like them. Linux Mint devs made a curious choice when creating desktop files though.

Compare the sane names of MATE apps
Eye of MATE Image Viewer
Atril Document Viewer

with

Image Viewer (=xviewer)
Document Viewer (=xreader)

Why adopt this crazy naming scheme (from Gnome) where you don't inform the user what the application is called? Maybe Firefox should just be called Web Browser according to Linux Mint devs?

Also Image Viewer should show up in the Graphics category, but doesn't. Document Viewer should show up in the Office category, but doesn't.

It's a shame, because these apps are good, but the desktop files don't do them justice.

This is probably a topic for the Linux Mint forum, but maybe Stevo can manually adjust desktop files next time he packages X-apps?

It would be nice to see these adjustments, maybe in time for MX-19:

Xviewer Image Viewer in Graphics category
Xreader Document Viewer in Office category

All the other X-apps must likely also be adjusted to blend in nicely with other apps in the menu.

I have to wonder why Linux Mint devs did this, because the purpose of X-apps is to be distro and desktop agnostic.
