[SOLVED] I stupidly messed up my OS all in the name off installing Wine

#1 Post by brolly »

Hi guys

I spectacularly managed to trash my system MX 18.3 all in the name of trying to install Wine. I was greeted with held packages and dependency errors. I went to one thread in this forum which suggesting downgrading some ?font related package. This led to everything being uninstalled for some odd reason. When I restarted i was greeted with a terminal-type prompt with no graphical interface. My saving grace is i backed up my system to an external drive yesterday using Macrium Reflect. I also have a snapshot saved as an ISO image so ppphhhhheeeww. The million Dollar question which sure has been asked a million times is, what is the safest way of installing Wine and Wine tricks?

You might consider this: MX manual chapter 6.1 and/or: MX Wiki Wine
Gigabyte Z77M-D3H, Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2 (Quad core), 32GB RAM,
GeForce GTX 770, Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB, Seagate Barracuda 4TB

since I've been using ./wine software for many years now:
- -never had any issues, over the many upgrades, that there has been

but - - I'm cheating  as I'm using the Commercial Version of ./wine:
https://www.codeweavers.com/
as I've the philosophy that I'm saving some $$$ by *not* using M$ expensive software.
& thus can afford to give some $$$ back to the Linux Community.

That sounds like an attracted proposition. I successfully managed to install the latest version of wine and playonlinux but it is riddled with bugs. their well rated apps simply don't install or run properly. To be honest i'm not in the mood of using workarounds etc. I think i will stick to running windows in a VM.

I followed the procedure. I had no Joy with MX package installer. Synaptic worked flawlessly. The software is too buggy for my liking. I will stick to my windows. No harm in that for now.

I installed Wine from MX Package Installer/Popular Applications/Misc and it works just fine here. *shrug*
