[SOLVED] Percent key in Galculator doesn't do anything

#1 Post by JayM »

Hiya! I was just trying to compute how much 1180 minus 20% would be, but the % key in Galculator seems to do nothing, both in Simple and Scientific view. It just shows 20 even after I click % and =. This suggests that it's a bug in galculator version 2.14, though I can't find anything anywhere else about it including at the github issues page.

Is this a bug in Galculator? Maybe I'm just not doing it right? With other calculators, as soon as I click % it would show 20% of 1180, then when I click = it would show me the end result (1180-20%.) Can anyone else confirm? Thanks.

How you describe it is how it works for me.

I would not consider it a bug; it's just the way it works.

It works a bit weirdly, true, but try this 4-key input:
95, %, 6, =
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

Easier to do on an RPN calculator
Backup: Dell9010, MX-19_B2, Win7, 120 SSD, WD 232GIB HD, 4GB RAM
Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
MX-18.2 64bit. Also MX17, Kubuntu14.04 & Puppy 6.3.

Kcalc is simple for percent. key 80-key 5 key % =76. However installing it requires KDE libraries and probably a good portion of KDE. Since I have KDE stuff installed it is my goto calculator. Overkill for some one wanting logical use of the calculator % function but does not want to load KDE stuff into XFCE.

Is that RPN?
1080 - (1080 %20) =
Anyway, that works. Thanks, Jerry. I hope I can remember that in the future. Meanwhile I'll mark this solved. Thanks again.

That's exactly why I don't want to install a different DE's calculator, because of all the other stuff that would also get installed. It's too bad that there isn't a stand-alone calculator for Linux that can do percentages, subcalculations inside of brackets, and with memory storage/recall. They're all tied to DEs, it seems.

I used KDE distros for years, so I'm probably used to kcalc's way of doing things (which acts the same as the calculator on my phone and also all stand-alone calcs that I've ever owned.)

@JayM, I fully understand. I prefer some of the KDE applications to the XFCE counterparts and have plenty of disk space, so it is not a burden to me. The file manager I prefer is Dolphin and that is the main reason I have KDE installed. Kwrite and kate are two others I prefer. I do not use the KDE DE only XFCE.
But I get off topic in violation of the Forum Rules I wrote. :lipsrsealed:

Galculator has an RPN mode. The keystroke sequence for this problem would be:

1180 Enter Enter 20% - which gives 944 as the answer

Primary :Homebrew64 bit Intel duo core 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, Seagate1TB.
