[SOLVED] PulseAudio Equalizer won't start

#1

Post by philotux » Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:32 pm

Hi,

I just installed the package pulseaudio-equalizer via Synaptic. I didn't get any menu entry for it so I tried to run it from terminal with:

Code: Select all

qpaeq
but I get the following error:

Code: Select all

There was an error connecting to pulseaudio, please make sure you have the pulseaudio dbus module loaded, exiting...
I looked it up on the web and found the following solution at https://askubuntu.com/questions/980876/ ... -equalizer:
To start pulseaudio-equalizer, run:

qpaeq

If this gives you the error

There was an error connecting to pulseaudio,
please make sure you have the pulseaudio dbus module loaded, exiting...

then edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and comment out or add these lines:

load-module module-equalizer-sink
load-module module-dbus-protocol

After saving the file you need to restart pulseaudio with:

pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio -D
Since I didn't want to cause any malfunction to my currently functioning sound, I thought I'd better ask here first. Is this the right way of solving the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds right. I don't use paeq but had to do a similar thing to run a different PA plugin.
And if it doesn't work it's easy to revert, and post back any error messages you get.

Alright, I will give it a try and report back.

Found the same solution at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... #Equalizer as well.
I went ahead and applied it. Got the equalizer working! BUT, I have the impression that it produces a somewhat stuttering sound which get worse changing the audio volume. So I am not sure that it is something that I will use.

Does anyone know of others system-wide equalizers that can be used under MX?

Make sure you've actually invoked qpaeq. Open the audio mixer and on the Playback tab you can assign it to various running progs.
MX-17.1 x64, on C2D, 6GB RAM, SSD.

Thanks paul1149!
This is how it looked like when I first tried it

I don't know if a reboot had anything to do with it, but after one, it does sound better and the issue with stuttering while changing volume is now gone as well.

That looks right. Mine didn't set that up automatically, and some kind soul here showed me how to do it manually. Glad that's working for you. :)

Thanks!
I am afraid I spoke too soon. The issue with stuttering sound while changing the volume is back, but intermittently.
Otherwise it seems to be working quite well.

Thank you for your help and suggestions!
I'm willing to try out other system-wide equalizers, if anyone knows of such. For now I mark this topic solved.
