If you request it I'm pretty sure it can be packaged for MX, I think we had it at some point in test repo if I remember correctly, I don't see it there now.

Brackets is good. I don't see that in the repositories either. But that never stop me, I just build from source. But the site has a nice .deb package for you anyway.

Go for Atom if you like it as well.

https://atom.io/

They also have a nice .deb package for you.

Thanks, all.

Exploring making a personal, non-commercial, don't-care-if-anyone-sees-it web page where I can rant and rave as I please into the winds of cyberspace..

That is the way to do it, no need to repackage Atom just for MX when the .deb already exists for *buntu and Debian and friends.

Earlier, I tried to be "diplomatic" in my post following gitcrack gitoncrack gimmecrack.
This is the Nth time time I've read his/her posts "advising" people to download .deb files from outside the debian//MX repositories.
Now, at reading this:
That is the way to do it, no need to repackage Atom just for MX when the .deb already exists for *buntu and Debian and friends.
Hello?
Visit the atom.io site and note that NOTHING is specified, other than a .deb file is avialable for download.
Will it work with Debian9 (MX17stable, MX18)? They don't know... and you're rolling the dice, risking borking your system, if you choose to install it in order to find out.

I seriously don't enjoy "being the squeaky wheel". OTOH, I'm distressed by watching MX users becoming the "next Ubuntu" crowd.

It's gimcrack; but your right. I never had a problem borking my system by using a .deb file. The older this .deb file the risky it is. Because of Dependencies Hell. But these are newer and still developed .deb packages so the risk is very low. It's always a possibility that the application not working or working correctly. But never bork my system with this small risk. Your concerns are real, so there is always that. Oh and gimcrack is a old jewelers term meaning "Showy but worthless". I just thought it's a funny user name so I been using it on day one when I discover the Internet back in 1995.

That's true and it would be better if they made it clear, but I have a comment on debs though, they are not inherently bad, they can't break your system if they don't pull or remove stuff and if they don't overwrite files (especially libs) -- obviously they should come from a trusted source. So if you install a deb and nothing gets removed and you don't overwrite any file (it would prompt you and you'd have to use --force-overwrite) then it can't really break your system, the operation to install a deb is pretty atomic so at most the program might not run, if the program doesn't run you can remove the deb and all the files installed are removed. That being said you have to depend on the people who write the deb and the crap they put in them, if for example they run scripts that do stuff that cannot be undone at removal.
