Browser Launching Problem, etc.

#1

Post by mickb » Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:29 am

In the root account of MX-18, I couldn't launch Opera, Vivaldi, or other programs installed via MX Package Installer. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't seem to help. Most, except 2, if the pre-installed games didn't launch either. These programs open up fine under the non-root user accounts. Please help. Thanks.

Asus Netbook with N4000 Celeron/4Gb RAMs/32Gb eMMC.

Aside from the fact that it is preferable NOT to log in as root to use these things and only go to root when you need to tweak global settings...

Have you tried launching these applications from the terminal? That will give you an output of what may be going on.

I thought I had read that Chromium based browsers can not be run as root. And Firefox, maybe.

Yes Firefox as well I get this if I try to run as root

Code: Select all

Running Firefox as root in a regular user's session is not supported. ($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is /run/user/1000 which is owned by gary.)
Desktop: MX-18_x64 | Intel i3-4360T | 4GB RAM | Samsung 250GB SSD
Laptop: antiX-17.3.1 | Intel T2310 | 1GB RAM | 150GB HDD

Thanks for your responses. As you could probably have guessed that I'm a newb. I just want to see how the programs work in root, now I know. I don't plan to run them as a root user in the future. Thanks. Here's the message that I got when I ran Opera in terminal:

"[4300:4300:0106/092548.982312:ERROR:zygote_host_impl_linux.cc(89)] Running as root without --no-sandbox is not supported. See https://crbug.com/638180."

Thanks, again.

So basically it is saying to try and start Opera in root like so:

Code: Select all

opera --no-sandbox
In the terminal.

I did not know that's the workaround. Learned something new today. Thanks, Eadwine!

Well.. it said so in the output :)

But still: it is NOT recommended to log in as root.
