Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
For those Gimp users the native .xcf format is not compatible between Gimp 2,8 and Gimp 2.10. Explanation is here.
https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp- ... Legacy-xcf
In addition I suspect this has caused some crashing of 2.10 when working with images saved in the older format. That is my experience.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
I think in gimp 2.10 during export dialogue it's mentioned with warning but backward compatibility is not understood.
Gimp should give a option during savings for backward compatibility.
Or else it should standardise the xcf format.
But we should upgrade the default to 2.10.8 and give as much 3rd party plugin like resynthesizer, save for web etc.. for better graphics creations.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
2.10.8 is in our internal testing versions of MX 18...so far, so good.
We should add the compatibility notice to the release notes.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
That's a good thing.
But default we are going to give gimp 2.10 basic, so are we giving gimp advance like currently available?
I found Many users in different gimp forum complaining about compatibility of gimp plugin like save for web and resynthesizer...etc.
Now gimp 2.10 support opening raw files through dark table if installed.
Are we including these additional gimp filters and plugin in gimp advance.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
Auro, in your view, should the advanced filters and plugins be provided by MX or not? Are they currently being provided by mx17?
Are there incompatibility issues? [EDIT: I SEE THAT YOU'VE STATED THERE ARE]
Also, from your earlier post, does that mean that people can no longer use all their xcf files created all these years, if we provide Gimp 2.10 as default?
That sounds alarming.
I'm unfamiliar as I hardly use Gimp.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
Gimp 2.10 will open xcf's created with older versions. But xcf's created with 2.10 will not be compatible with older versions of Gimp. In fact what I have found is that once you open an xcf made with an older version and save it with 2.10 you are warned it is no longer compatible with older versions. So it is essentially one way compatibility.asqwerth wrote: ↑Sat Dec 01, 2018 9:47 pm Auro, in your view, should the advanced filters and plugins be provided by MX or not? Save for web is no longer available for 2.10. People need to get over it and use another method. https://discuss.pixls.us/t/save-for-web ... 10/7503/10

We should definitely upgrade to 2.10 as it has more potential
But I mentioned backward compatibility issues i.e if I created a image on 2.10 it will not open with 2.8
So if someone using 17.1 may not able to open that.
So I am asking the gimp developers to provide a option to save in old format for that compatibility.
Save for web is not available for 2.10, and I tried old save for web with 2.10 and it's not working.
So I definitely want gimp additional extras and plugins to available for us, like gmic, resynthesizer, layer styles but we have to create them from source if available and test them.
Some filters are now integrated into new gimp like wavelet decompose ,drop shadow, long shadow etc.. and gimp now providing live filter preview which is great.

Re: Gimp 2.8/2.10 incompatibility
There is a way for them to be compatible.
In the Gimp 2.10 layer dialog near "layer mode" there is a small yellow circular arrow. If you press it, two options appear, the yellow arrow and another.
Put the other option in each and every one of the layers and when you save the XCF this will be able to be opened by Gimp 2.6 and Gimp 2.8 if you don't check the compression box.
