Some programs won't start up after fresh 17.1 install

#1 Post by reidun » Mon Nov 05, 2018 12:37 pm

Hi, I just installed MX17.1 October build on my desktop machine, and am having trouble getting a couple programs to start. Nothing happens when I start them from the start menu, or from right clicking on the file to open and choosing "Open with...". I did get some output in a terminal window which I will post.

The programs I am having trouble with are Gimp and Digikam. I suspect I'm missing some file, but don't know which.

Here's the terminal output for each one.

Code: Select all

$ gimp

Have you checked the md5sum of the download and then of the burned iso? It could be a bad burn (either usb or dvd) and things will go wonky then.

Well, seems not real fresh. As didgam is not installed per default.
So please show text output of:

Code: Select all

apt policy gimp digikam
I've just install digikam on a realy fresh booted MX17.1 October LiveISO and updated, which gives me nicely:

Code: Select all

apt policy gimp digikam
gimp:
  Installed: 2.8.22-0mx17+1
  Candidate: 2.8.22-0mx17+1
  Version table:
 *** 2.8.22-0mx17+1 500
        500 http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo stretch/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2.8.18-1+deb9u1 500
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://security.debian.org stretch/updates/main amd64 Packages
digikam:
  Installed: 4:5.3.0-1
  Candidate: 4:5.3.0-1
  Version table:
 *** 4:5.3.0-1 500
        500 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Just do Ignore any warning on the cli like this (which you can and should simply ignore):

Code: Select all

gimp 2>&1 | grep -iv Warning
or

Code: Select all

digikam 2>&1 | grep -iv Warning
started both app's fine without any further error messages.
And perhaps do also post the system info

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Note: Always do verify the downloaded ISO, in any case, and especially do this before you post any issues here.
Thanks

The gimp symbol problem seems similar to what we'd get with gimp 2.10.6 with an older libbabl-0.1-0, like the one in deb-multimedia pretending to be higher than our test repo version.

Please show the result of

Code: Select all

apt policy gimp libbabl-0.1-0

I did check the downloaded file, but didn't check the DVD before installing. Just now I did and here's the output. Not sure what this means.

Code: Select all

$ md5sum /dev/cdrom
md5sum: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error
Edit: Is there a better way to check md5s on DVDs?

You are right, I did install Digikam via Synaptic right after installing MX17.1, and running the few updates that needed to be done.

Yes. First check the iso:

Code: Select all

md5sum MX-17.1_October_x64.iso.md5
If you still have the iso.
ANd do check the burned CDrom with something like

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/cdrom 2>/dev/null | md5sum
and compare existing md5sum manually

Code: Select all

cat MX-17.1_October_x64.iso.md5

The multimedia repo in the post above is the issue. We shall really take it out, as this provides nearly always issues.
And I think we took it already out

The OP says this is a fresh install--how did it get the DMO libbabl with the test repo GIMP on it? (Did I call that one or what? ;) ) Hopefully those aren't on the ISO...

The solution is to disable deb-multimedia, remove libbabl-0.1-0 (letting it remove gimp), then reinstalling gimp from the test repo with the package installer (if you want 2.10.6).
