Login Manager bug? Correct user and root credentials!

#1 Post by Mich-C » Sat Nov 03, 2018 6:55 pm

Hi everyone.
I'm using MX 17.1 with the defaul login manager, lightdm.
Suddenly I can't login anymore as user to my system:

---user login from lightdm doesn't show error messages and after confirming credentials I just get a lightdm refresh!!
---root login from lightdm works
---root login from shell (ctrl alt fn) works
---user login from shell (ctrl alt fn) works

Maybe you have read my last thread on the forum where I' working with other users on my "strange" GPU, I want to specify that I haven't started to make any change to the system yet.
This bug appeared after a shutdown that followed an hibernation.

A friend of mine adviced to install another Login Manager but I'll want to find another solution...

Reasonable suggestion from a web search on "can't login lightdm"
If entering a password into display manager like gdm or lightdm and desktop is not loaded, but you get redirected back to login screen, delete file .Xauthority in your home folder and try again
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

Thank you. I deleted the.Xauthority file in my "home/michele" folder but I still get the login-loop.
I don't know if this info can help but I also tryed to login in lxde session instead of xfce but nothing...

Another thing to check is the permissions of your users home folder and make sure your user is still the owner.

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-17
lenovo s21e & 100s - antiX-17, MX17(live-usb)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Also check that your home directory is not full.

I also had the same problem after updating today.
I tried this

Code: Select all

mv .Xauthority .Xauthority.bak
(from here: https://satuimrambles.wordpress.com/20 ... ntu-16-04/), and it worked, although I haven't restarted yet.

Success!

Can you check in the history and tell what was updated?

Thank you for the link. It seemed to me the best solution for now cause it tryes to cover the several causes that can generate this loop.
The problem is that
Step 1: renaming the . Xauthority file with "mv" didn't work for me
Step 2: I executed "sudo chown michele . Xauthority" and I also tryed to change ownerships opening a root-thunar, but the problem just got worse: after clicking "change user" I just got a black screen with a blinking underscore, ctrl+fb+f1 or f7 didn't work at all. I had to shutdown the computer holding the power button. I rebooted and I got some "recovering journal" diagnostics during boot, now instead of lightdm I just see the blinking underscore... :(

Do you mean the "bash history" files? My distro doesn't auto-updates because even after the bug I logged in as root and I saw the mx-updater icon showing a balloon with "181 updates avaible"
But maybe auto-updates for other components of the system could be auto-started by MX ...

Thank you. I installed the whole MX (alongside Windows) in a single partition, and over 300gb are still empty
