[SOLVED] How can I install the latest Xfce 4.13 apps

#1 Post by alcornoqui » Thu Oct 04, 2018 6:29 am

How can I install some or all of the new versions of xfce4-settings, xfce4-session, xfce4-display-settings, etc (as seen in the Xfce blog)?

My system:
Host: mx1 Kernel: 4.13.0-1-686-pae i686 bits: 32 Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3
Distro: MX-17_386 Horizon December 15 2017

Many of them are in our test repo.

lenovo ThinkPad T530 - MX-17
lenovo s21e & 100s - antiX-17, MX17(live-usb)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Oh, hell yeah, that was easier than I thought and has much more goodies than I thought, installing!

For the record, I just had to check (uncomment) this line in MX Repos:

#deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/ stretch test

Thanks a lot, great work!

Please comment that line back ! Leaving the test repository active makes it likely that your next update/upgrade cycle will override a lot of standard pieces of SW with the more recent versions present in the test repo. These are not as well tested as the default repo, hence this could potentially lead to problems. When you install packages using the graphical mx-package-installer, it only enables the test repo while you switch to the corresponding tab and select packages from there, then disables it on leaving the installer.

You don't need to uncomment anything manually in the sources text files or using Synaptic.

Just use MX Packageinstaller. There is a nice separate tab for the MX Test Repo so you can browse just the Test Repo contents on its own, install what you want, and then it disables the repo at the end of installation.

Ok, got it, thanks for the heads up!

New versions of the Xfce programs are up and running, no apparent issues.

For what it's worth, the packaging team does make an effort to have the packages in the test repo slot in smoothly as upgrades. As an extreme example, my own standard install keeps both the test and experimental MX repos enabled at all times, and it works fine so far. (but you should backup your system first if you want to do the same thing) I hope to catch problem packages in those repos by doing this.
