The web version does not allow skype-to-skype calls, so it's useless.
The latest skype for linux does work fully, but the interface is much nastier than the old (defunct) version.

If you want to make voice or video calls, you’ll need to use Microsoft Edge and the latest versions of Chrome.
I guess it's only for Chrome and yes, there's a Skype extension that I think you need to install it for that. Sorry for misleading you before...

Thanks!
So it really sounds like it is optimized for Windows/Edge.
I might be better off just using my Fire HD 10" tablet and/or the Android smartphone.

A quick lookup on Viper: Poor data protection:
Wikipedia wrote: Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viber
Deepl-translated:
Viber has been criticized for his poor data protection. Viber collects data in significant amounts that far exceed the usual level of other VoIP providers (for example Skype), both from users and non-users of the service. Much of this data is stored without the consent and without the knowledge of the persons concerned and thus violates EU data protection law.

Wikipedia wrote: Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viber

That's good to know, I still prefer Viber over WhatsApp, I won't touch Facebook apps if I can. I don't trust them at all. Unfortunately it's all tradeoffs... which app is less evil.

Curently I'm running "Wire" with some non-techie friends and family members, runs on linux, android, etc . Just register for free with an extrem long random PW /username hold within KeePassXC. fairly good security reviews, made and server in Swiss . Good viedeo and voice.

I have discovered that a usable version (7.36) of Skype still works on XP.
It is much better than any of the working "Skype for Linux" versions.
Tried it successfully in vbox XP: would it work in WINE?
