Flatpak & configuring the font size of its app's?

#1 Post by handy » Sat May 26, 2018 5:08 am

I've had very little experience using Flatpak. I'll always prefer to use an package from the distros repos.

BUT, sometimes I may need to give Flatpak a go when chasing either availability or stability.

I have just installed my first Flatpak on MX - Kdenlive. The reason is stability, as kdenlive turns itself off randomly, when installed from the repo on my system.

The Flatpak version installed OK (download was a lot slower for me though, which doesn't matter). My problem, is that the fonts are really too small for me to work with. I only installed kdenlive over blender due to the same kind of font problem, though the kdenlive installed from the repos does use my system's settings - qt5ct & associated.

From a view of a couple of pages on github, is looks to me like the only way for me to change these settings is for me to make my own flatpak package? I hope I'm mistaken, as I really couldn't be bothered doing that.

Does anyone here have any input on this topic?

Thanks in advance. ;)

OK, a little more on this one: I initially wanted to use Blender for my video editing (used it years ago, done none since) & installed it & Blender had the same problem of too small font size for my 1080p display. I didn't pursue the problem any further (& I've forgotten most of whatever I had learned about Blender way back then) so then I went the Kdenlive route, as written in the OP.

So, my thinking is that I'm not going to get around the Flatpak font config' problem (easily). This sent me on a search for a solution for the Blender font config, & I very quickly came up with a pleasing result, which I found here:

https://blender.stackexchange.com/quest ... ion-screen

So, now my interest in this Flatpak font config' problem has become primarily for future reference, for myself, & I'm sure that there are other Flatpak users & future Flatpak users that would like clarification on this one.

Or maybe it is just me, not seeing the obvious again... ;)

I don't have much experience beyond installing lollypop and VLC3 flatpaks, but I did notice that flatpak programs don't really following the themeing of the main system. I never messed with font sizes in those 2 apps.

Just to check, which version was your initialy kdenlive that kept turning itself off? Did you install it from main or MX Test Repo?

Please see this thread.: viewtopic.php?p=446955#p446955

If you tested the latest version that was in the Test Repo, perhaps you could post your bug reports and problems in that thread to enable the Packaging Team to investigate further? If your version isn't that one, perhaps you could test that one and see if it works better?

@asqwerth I have already removed both the repo installed kdenlive & the flatpak. Following is a couple of selections of the info' when I ask apt to "show":

Code: Select all

Package: kdenlive
Version: 1:17.04.2-dmo1
Priority: optional
Section: video
Source: kdenlive-dmo
Maintainer: Christian Marillat <marillat@deb-multimedia.org>
Bugs: mailto:marillat@deb-multimedia.org
Installed-Size: 6,971 kB

Code: Select all

APT-Sources: http://www.deb-multimedia.org stretch/main amd64 Packages
Re. the "bug", I was just looking around the menus & such & it switched itself off. That was all I needed, as no one really wants to have anything to do with a package (on their machine) that is going to do that. Loosing our work sucks!

Well there you are.

That's not the version from an official Debian or MX source. Debian multimedia (dmo) is an unofficial 3rd party Repo that is responsible for many problems on this forum.

How did you come to install from this Repo? It's not enabled by default.

You will need to disable said Repo, and use MX Package Installer > Full App Catalog tab > test repo to install the latest, properly backported version.

Please post the output of

inxi - r

In the midst of stripping mx to bare bones and installing only a very specialised set of programs you might have enabled and installed stuff from repos that are causing conflicts now.

@asqwerth, Yes, I agree with you completely. :) I have totally stuffed up the original MX install so as to suit my own quirky tastes (as you know). Thus far, beyond this "one & only" self created problem, all has been going really well. Actually, much better than I expected. I am still here using MX, after totally messing with MX's gizzards & MX still hasn't become the horror child Dr. Frankenstein that I expected it to become. ;)

So, as far as I'm concerned all is well. (I'll use Blender & not Kdenlive now anyway, as it was my first choice to begin with, but that is really by the by...). :D

I remember an MX forum member, Arjen, having a similar problem with VLC, which is also QT based. He found a suggestion that worked on the Videolan forum. It was simply an environment variable change.

Code: Select all

export QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=0
Perhaps this would work in your situation, too.

Rich suggests putting it in /etc/X11/Xsession.d <your config>

Here is a link to the forum thread.
