Conky Helps and Stuff

#1 Post by KoO » Mon Apr 23, 2018 2:00 am

Sorry for the double post and posting in the wrong forum..(Would it be possible to clean up the screenshots post)
@male
In principle, this is a weather rss-fed. For more days I can only recommend,
download the archive 1_accuweather. Teo explains the necessary steps wonderfully and it contains the pictures of 2015 and the new ones of 2016.
Depending on taste, it contains 10 or 11 different weather conkys. All in the Conky_Version 1.10
It is no problem to reset the syntax to 1.9. I'd be happy to help.
I never use conky manager to me it is pretty useless .I always use a text editor.
I don't see a need to go back to 1.9 their is not much deference anyway..
Trouble I was having was with the 2p type code and so on.All need is the p codes.

@male and everyone else Thanks for your help

Conky-Manager or not, conky1.9 or conky1.10, it's always a matter of taste in the eye of the beholder.
The "simple user" who liked to create with conky1.9 and the thousands of beautiful Conky creations will have problems with conky1.10 unless he is willing to sniff the syntax of Lua. ;)

I'm glad you solved their 2p code problem (and about your thread). :happy:

@male
I agree with you each to their own..All the conky's I use were v1.9 converted to 1.10>

If anyone would like to try and convert their conky to 1.10> in MX linux /usr/share/doc/conky-all are the files to convert to 1.10> convert.lua etc

Just place your .conkyrc file the folder and run the command below a new file will be created (conkyrc) without dot) this is your new conky 1.10> It will not over write your 1.9 .conkyrc file.
Then just place a . dot like your old conkrc and try to run the file hopefully all will be well..

lua ./convert.lua .conkyrc conkyrc

If you just run conky 1.10++ without Conky Manager, it will be able to read and recognise old syntax conkies in general. So no conversion is usually needed from either syntax. I use a combination of old and new-syntax conkies interchangeably on most of my distros running conky 1.10++ except for MX17, which is the only one using CM by default.

It is only CM that cannot read new syntax conkies in their user interface. The developer does not appear interested in learning enough about lua syntax to enable CM to detect it. I'm guessing nothing will change unless a third party pushes some fix to him for his consideration.

https://github.com/teejee2008/conky-manager/issues/2

On the other hand, CM is useful not because of its editing capabilities (since it just opens up the conky in your default text editor) but because the graphical interface is a good way to (ahem) "manage" your whole list of conkies and you can run more than 1 conky at a time easily just by ticking your selected conkies. Yes, you can run more than one conky simultaneously without CM but you will need to start conky via some script and then manually edit it every time you want to change the conky scripts you are running.

In MX17, the intention was to make conkies easier for newcomers to run and modify without the intimidating impression that one had to be a geek knowing how to manually edit scripts. Hence CM and the default collection of conkies chosen and modded to work nicely from the graphical tools (CM, and MX-Conky for colour changes). The idea is that a suitable conky should not have too many variables that require manual editing of text files before they will work.

To be honest, I don't even run conky from the CM or anything. I use the old fashioned way still. I disable the conky on the desktop, and then run my own .conkyrc file from my /username/ folder, using

Code: Select all

conky -c /home/username/.conkyrc

And to autostart I have the following in session and startup - autostart

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/conky -p 7

Works like a peach :)

I also agree with this statement.
It is only CM that cannot read new syntax conkies in their user interface. The developer does not appear interested in learning enough about lua syntax to enable CM to detect it. I'm guessing nothing will change unless a third party pushes some fix to him for his consideration.
The developer of the Conky Manager also wanted to provide the simple user with a tool with which he could conjure up Conky configurations on his desktop.
This also includes clocks/rings; graphs etc. pp.

If you want to know why the developer is not moving towards Conky1.10 with the Conky Manager - a simple example:

With Conky1.9 I can embellish the MX-Asq_clock_new_default with a background and round corners.
lua1.jpg
lua2.jpg
code depending on desktop, above TEXT or below TEXT

Code: Select all

...
# Output
##############################################
#--Lua--#
lua_load ~/LUA/draw-bg.lua
lua_draw_hook_pre draw_bg 10 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.2
#${lua conky_draw_bg 10 0 0 0 0 0x000000 0.2}
TEXT

...
This is done by this simple Lua script.

Check this out on Conky-Version1.10 and you'll find it doesn't work anymore. ;)

I like the way MX users CM as a switcher.
Eadwine Rose I'm with you.

@male 1.9 version much nicer they still have work to do 1.10 surely they can get it to work as good as 1.9.After all 1.10 is supposed to be more lua based.

@male, thanks for your explanation of the differences. To be honest, I haven't actually learnt how to make use of the various available lua scripts for myself.
