Problem to get xplanetFX to work

#1 Post by Gruhel »

Hello,

I changed Linux about a week or two ago and have been getting most of what I did with it by trial and error and youtube.
Finally I started with MX17 Linux and stayed with it. Then I found the live wallpaper program xplanetFX (http://mein-neues-blog.de/xplanetfx/) and tried it, but it will not show on the desktop.
As far as I can tell it works but does not have any effect and does not show as wallpaper backround. In all the guides I have watched the programme is activated and it shows up. That does not happen for me.
Does anybody have experience with this or has an idea what to do?

Thank you for looking at it.

Welcome to the Forum! I never even heard of this, but it seems to install OK. I will take a look later.

Did you read through the issues page?

Did you try starting it in a console? Here is what I get when I do:

Code: Select all

$ xplanet
Warning: Can't find earth.jpg in
xplanet/images
/home/jb/.xplanet/images
/usr/share/xplanet/images
Do you have an image in any of those locations? Check again the issues page if not.

Following your post I started looking for an image but could not find it yet. Will keep searching tonight.

I have fond a folder xplanet in /usr/share and a folder xplanet XF

Tried to modify the output in then graphic menu but did not result in anything.

I no longer have it installed but my final suggestion would be that you try downloading and installing a theme, which I gather you can do from within the GUI itself.

May sound silly but I give it another try.

First I will install MX again in English, and if I cannot get it to work I will try the alternative from launchpad.

Should I succeed I will post here - if not I hide.

No need to hide! I am intrigued with what I see of it, but have no time right now to look into it further.

Did you have xplanet installed? According to the instructions, installing the deb should pull that in, but I just get download failures for it. So that begs the question as to how you installed it.

download the tar file and extract it, goto usr > share > xplanetFX folder > right click open terminal then run xplanetFX --gui .
MX-17.1_x64 Horizon, G41M-P33 Combo (MS-7592), Pentium E5400 (2706 MHz), 8Gb RAM (984 MT/s),
Intel 4 Series Integrated Graphics, Realtek PCIe Fast RTL8101/2/6E, PCI Gigabit RTL8169 Ethernets.
Accepted Linux when i found MX-Linux in 2016.

So then you need to manually install the dependencies that are clearly stated in the instructions.
