How to delete "undeletable" folders? [Solved]

#1 Post by rej » Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:45 am

Moving folders on a flash drive to a partition in a 1 TB USB hard drive in MX17 and the drive kept mounting and unmounting by itself in the middle of the transfer, which resulted in a corrupted undeletable empty (nothing in it when clicked on) folder on the 1 Tb hard drive. I was able to rename it, but nothing else.

There does not seem to be a problem with the hard drive or the connections -did some testing.

Opened thunar as root to delete, no success. Looked through the forums and googled, tried a 3 party app, but no success.

Is there another way to delete it without erasing the entire partition? Not a big problem if that is the only way (I don't think...). Just like to know if it is possible to do it without having to resort to that, in the event that it should happen again in a more critical situation.

Why would a USB hard drive keep mounting and unmounting itself in the middle of a process? Too many storage partitions?

Any help with this will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Lots of hits to a G search on "linux delete corrupted empty file" you might want to look at.
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB

usually when I see mount/unmount/mount cycles, its due to a faulty cord or port. Usually a cord though.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

How about doing a fsck on the drive first? I would back up anything important on the drive before doing so, to be absolutely safe.

Had tried many variations similar to the "linux delete corrupted empty file" search, however your exact search helped me to find this simple fix that finally worked!:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/566474/ ... -directory

"I had the same problem on a external hard disk, I tried so many ways using command line, but I failed every time. That's what worked for me:

Right click on folder
Move to trash
Empty trash
Yes, it's silly but it worked for me (I don't really know how and why, but the damned folder no longer exist)"

As for the connection, it works without any problems in MX16.1. Tried different connectors in MX17 and it seemed to fix it. Prior to the replaced cables, it was mounting and unmounting all the time.

Thanks for the fsck tip - did not know about that one.

Thank you all for the quick response and good information!

Yes, it is essentially the first "go to" for information. Considering my (in)experience with Linux, and more so, the "command line", I am hesitant to experiment with some of the suggestions, unless it indicates how to reverse, in order to avoid further complications - especially if it comes from a forum other than MX and very old posts. Tried to make a snapshot ISO backup, since everything seems OK at the moment, however, it failed. I usually rely on them if I get adventurous in the terminal. Did a lot of tweaking and changes since the last successful snapshot 2 weeks ago, and don't want to do them all over again. Need to uncover what tweak or change threw off the snapshot process.

Thanks again for the help! I appreciate it very much.
