LibreOffice problem after Upgrade to MX-17 from MX-16 [SOLVED]

#1 Post by NevilsStation » Tue Jan 09, 2018 6:46 pm

QUESTION: I have the OS on a SSD & everything else on a HDD.
When I try to access a document from LibreOffice, one that I accessed prior to the upgrade, it doesn't recognize it in the Recent Files menu.
When I try to Open the file it's asking for the Root password.
How do I fix that so it's not wanting a Root password for files on the HDD (it never used to).
Thanks!

EDIT:
The error window says ...

/media/***/hdd1/savestuff/web/***/***/***/***.doc does not exist.

... but it does.

Why, please, after the upgrade to MX-17 does LibreOffice now fail to see it, please?

Thanks!

Use Disk Manager to enable the drive you want to mount at boot
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 4.15.0-1-386. MX-17.1, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB
Personal: XPS 13, 4.18.0-19.3-liquorix, 4 GB

That fixed a different problem ...

I'd noticed that I could not right-click in Thunderbird to Mark an email as unread - now I can.

But, I still get the same error in LibreOffice.

Do I need to toggle a pointer in LibreOffice somewhere?

ALSO: Nothing recognizes the printer (Brother HL-2260W - was using HL-2170 driver just fine) that worked fine prior to the Upgrade.

I tried to Add a printer via Printer Manager but that failed.

Maybe the drive got switched to root ownership. I had quite a bit of permissions problems with internal drives upon installing MX17. They're about 99% sorted now.

in the /media folder, right-click on your hdd, select Properties and check the Permissions tab. You probably want your user account to own the drive and its contents and have full access. The best way to make the change is by command line.

OK

Code: Select all

sudo chmod -R ugo+rw /media
fixed the LibreOffice problem. Thanks!

However, I'm still unable to see the printer.

Note: The printer is connected to the router and was working fine. It's accessible from another computer (MX-16) but every print job requires the root password on that machine.

WDYT?

Thanks!

Great!

If you can see the printer at Menu/settings manager/print, check its properties/access control.

If not, maybe try, with the computer on, unplugging the printer from the router and plugging it back in.

Next I would go into the router firmware and see if there are any access controls in effect.

No can see. Here's the CUPS error I receive when I choose Find Network Printer at

Code: Select all

Tried, no joy.

Nothing was changed on the router and I don't see any access controls that MX-17 would suddenly have trouble with that MX-16 did not.

WDYT, please?

Perhaps Debian Stretch requires a new driver. Did you check the sources in the Wiki?
Production: 4.15.0-1-amd64, MX-17.1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB

That looks like a nightmare process - and none of the Brother laser printers in the same category and mine appear in the supported list.

Questions:

What might have been broken in the Upgrade that renders a whole bunch of Brother printers unusable?

I can't be the only Debian Stretch/MX-17 user who's Brother printer suddenly doesn't work - any rumblings about a fix?

It seems odd that a whole class of MX-16 drivers for Brother printers are suddenly unusable in MX-17.

Have you tested the firewall status?
  • sudo ufw status will tell you if it's on.
  • sudo ufw disable will drop it for testing
  • sudo ufw enable sets it back up
  • sudo ufw status verbose will list permissions.
