Win Xp cannot see or open MX16 files

#1 Postby Toastrack » Wed May 17, 2017 10:43 am

I have just installed MX16 64 bit in place of an earlier 32 bit version. Basically the install went magically well.
But, although now the MX machine can open the Windows files on the samba network (which it had automatically set up during installation), the Win machine fails to open any of the MX16 machine's files.
The same workgroup name is specified throughout, and shares have been set up for the all the relevant MX files, but the Win machine can't access them. I have had varying messages, about access denied, and sometimes about multiple names (which I suspect don't exist).
I am now at a loss as to how to sort this out! Under the previous installation there was little difficulty in getting this to work.

There is a free application that will do the job ... I have been using it for years and have had no issues ... it installs on Win 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 Server, Vista, 7, 8 ...

I think you guys are missing this critical part of the original post! It worked on 32-bit MX out of the box.

Toastrack, did you save your /home folder and its settings when you installed 64-bit over it?

You could also experiment with creating a new user and seeing if the file sharing works for that user.

the Win machine fails to open any of the MX16 machine's files.

So, it does seem to be a Samba problem.

so can you not see your shares at all, or just can't open them.

if you could post the actuall error messages (screenshots are fine) that would be great.

also posting the permission settings of the folder you are trying to share (ls -l from the parent folder). and your /etc/samba/smb.conf file (I think that's the path).

9 times out of 10 these kinds of things are permissions problems. I cover permissions in the videos in this series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 52WGl_5nU-

I always forget to create "samba" users myself, which is critical for password protected shares.

the videos are for mx14, but it should still be valid.

Firstly, Linux-reader only runs in windows and sees the files on that machine (at least on my machine at present).

Secondly, I have looked further in to Samba, and once could see a list of all shares, although I cannot get that to show now, not sure why. But I did notice that it showed all the WinXP shares fine (which I can access from MX16), under the correct workgroup name, but there was a previous section of the list headed "WORKGROUP" which included samba and the printer drivers.

From this it looks to me as though the MX16 workgroup has not been given the necessary name and still carries the default name. But I cannot fathom out how to rename it.

May be I am on the wrong tack, but hopefully someone can tell me and get me out of this mess.

I did try creating a new user but it achieved nothing as far as I could tell.

Re the earlier post, I have looked at smb.conf, and it includes the active line
workgroup - [correct name]
which looks OK to me.
The line
winsupport = no
is commented out.

I have not yet unearthed the other info.

I find now that the Samba configuration tool will not show up when I select it. I tried re-installing it, but got an error message.

Having gone through Dolphin's extremely helpful videos on youtube I feel that persuing the problem with something fundamentally wrong in the installation might dig me deeper into the mire.

So I am proposing to do a complete clean re-install of MX 16, making sure that all the machines and printers on the network are running, in the hope that it will then work better, and probably take up less time than the present struggle.
It seems best to do this soon, rather than wait until too much personalisation of MX 16 has taken place.

So I think I should close this thread, with very many thanks to all whose comments have been helpful to my understanding of just what is going on.
