Before I installed the 7.1.8 version,
I tried the suggestion in the Google Product forum posted.
They suggested that removing xserver-xorg-video-intel on post-2007 machines,
would make it use its built-in modesetting driver, DDX.

That was the idea, but it didn't work for me.

Code: Select all

System: Host: mx171 Kernel: 4.18.0-0.bpo.1-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 6.3.0
           Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: MX-17.1_x64 Horizon March 14 2018
           base: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)

Mobo: LENOVO model: 2347AY1 v: NO DPK serial: <filter> UEFI [Legacy]: LENOVO
           v: G1ET73WW (2.09 ) date: 10/19/2012
CPU: Topology: Dual Core model: Intel Core i5-3320M bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Ivy Bridge family: 6
           model-id: 3A (58) stepping: 9 microcode: 20 L2 cache: 3072 KiB
           flags: lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 20751
           Speed: 2798 MHz min/max: 1200/3300 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 2798 2: 2996 3: 2742 4: 2809

Reinstalled the xserver and now will try the version 7.1.8. [Which works fine on this laptop.]

Thanks for the tips. The Google products forum seems a good place for spelunking info.

I believe that older versions of inxi displayed no driver if modesetting was being used, which might why it's not visible for you.

Don't think I'm using modesetting.
I ran the "inxi -G" before I removed "xserver-xorg-video-intel",
but then it wouldn't boot to a GUI, so I reinstalled "xserver-xorg-video-intel" and it's AOK.
Maybe my IvyBridge is not new enough.

Code: Select all

root@mx171:/home/richard# pinxi -G
Graphics: Device-1: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel
           resolution: 1600x900~60Hz, 1440x900~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile v: 3.3 Mesa 13.0.6
At any rate, GoogleEarth 7.1.8 works well enough for my needs.
Hopefully, they will work out the bugs from 7.3.x real soon now. :)

Thanks,
Richard.

The theming and fonts might look just fine on a system with a newer Qt 5, so Google might not care that much about fixing that issue. The "intel" driver has been broken for years now. 9_9
