Firefox tweak for SSD's

#1 Postby NevilsStation » Sat Aug 12, 2017 10:51 pm

I've observed a slowdown to total stall and finally stumbled on the cause.
Firefox writes a ton to the drive & that eventually overwhelms and wears a SSD.
The fix:
Type "about:config" in the URL field
Scroll down to browser.sessionstore.interval
Double-click or right-click on the Value field
Change to 100000 for 10 minutes, 300000 for 30 minutes, or whatever.

FYI, units for "browser.sessionstore.interval" is milliseconds.
Here's a reference: https://www.ghacks.net/2008/07/09/change-the-session-store-interval-in-firefox/

a value of 100000 ~= 100seconds
If a 10min interval is your goal, specify a value of 600000 (10min x 60sec X 1000ms)

So much for my math skills ... :-)

Thanks for the correction!

Well, I though this (see above) had solved the problem ... but, no.
Task Manager is showing what our son (CS major) labels a "memory leak".
I can click back and forth from Firefox with 5 windows open and Thunderbird and watch the memory being eaten up.
The computer tends to freeze at about 88% memory used.
Firefox shows as using 1.6GiB under RSS with Memory at 31%
Anyone else seeing this, please?
Thanks!

Firefox is a great browser but needs tricks to stabilize memory appetite. Try Opera instead or Vivaldi.I use Opera as primary browser and Firefox as secondary.

If you truly have 5 separate, concurrent, firefox windows open (or did you mean to type tabs?), what you're observing may well be the to-be-expected behavior rather than a "leak". Each time a different window (or tab) gains focus, sessionstore records the (@about 100bytes each) event. If you revert browser.sessionstore.interval to 15secs, and let the browser idle 15secs without generating any new events... you should notice RSS decrease when the flush occurs.

If you still suspect a "leak", you can periodically visit about:memory to generate a report. FWIW, across the years I've discovered leaky extensions by disabling all, then individually re-enabling them and repeatedly checking about:memory but I've never discovered a leak in the main application.

hi to all, newbie on mxlinux.
i had similar problems which puzzled me why ff consumed huge amount of ram n cpu resources.
after searching throughout final resolved, happily n surfing with ff.

here's are the solutions:
1) add-on adblocker (prefer ublock), this is a must becoz ff is magnet for ads n the reason why ff consumed all your cpu n ram resources.
disable adblocker if u want to watch the ads n gives support for those websites.

2) prevent cache read/write on ssd (u should have >4gb ram):
a) goto about:config n search for cache, cache parameters change to false;
browser.cache.disk.enable = false
browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled = false
browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl = false
browser.cache.offline.enable = false
browser.cache.use_new_backend_temp = false

leave this alone, browser.cache.memory.enable = true (default).
u need >4gb, everything are loaded on memory n not write on ssd.

3) search for datareporting, change the following to false:
a) datareporting.healthreport.uploadEnabled = false
b) datareporting.policy.dataSubmissionEnabled = false
c) goto about:support > clik on open directory > datareporting folder > delete archived folder (huge amount of data accumulated).

4) still on about:config, search for telemetry:
a) toolkit.telemetry.archive.enabled = false

done.
restart ff, enjoy.

Thanks stsoh!

Welcome to mxlinux. I date back to some of the earliest versions of Linux, and many others since, and really like this one.
(I know enough to be dangerous but lack the knowledge and time to really dig into the guts of things.)

I do have ublock active.

2 questions, please?

1. Do you recommend "Refresh Firefox" in about:support, or a reboot, to be sure all buffers are purged & all settings active?

2. Do I guess correctly that some of these settings also enhance privacy?

3. Do you use Thunderbird & if so are there any tweaks you'd recommend?

Thanks again!

answers to your questions;
1) no, don't do refresh ff. this will reset to default setting, akin to newly install ff. after doing the listed settings, close n restart ff.
2) i did too many changes to ff (see pics), couldn't recall all. listings above are related to ff high cpu n ram usage, plus minimize write-on ssd.
3) i don't use thunderbird at all, didn't know any tweaks for tb.
