how can I use this external webcam--old Creative from XP [solved]days
I have an external webcam, a Creative 'Live!Cam'. the box says its for Windows 2000/XP. there is a cd rom with it, but I'm thinking that wouldn't work with mx linux. Can I use this old piece of iron? If so, how?

First of all by plugging it in, and then lsusb in a terminal, see if it recognizes it.
You can post the output in code tags.

Well, I had plugged it into a usb port and nothing happened. do not understand what you mean by "then lusb in a terminal and see if it recognizes it..."
Meanwhile, can you recommend a webcam that would work with my x220 that runs mx 19.4?

Open a terminal, enter lsusb.
If it is in there it gets seen.

What is guvcview? I did not find it on my system using catfish. Once I open a terminal and enter lusub, what do I do--then, how do I get out of there?!

Click menu icon, go to multimedia, click guvcview

Re: how can I use this external webcam--old Creative from XP days
Success!--er, sort of. As eadwine rose instructed, I went to menu/multimedia/guvcview (after I had plugged the old webcam into a usb port). Voila, my image appeared--sort of. Very dark, barely visible and fuzzy. I went into the controls and increased sharpness, brightness to max--didn't help. then i increased gamma (whatever that is) to max and, finally, I saw myself. However, image was still not bright enough and also quite fuzzy. Could the webcam be that bad--or are there other things to play with that might improve things? Interesting finding, I went to usb dismounter in bottom bar and it showed no usb device to unmount. So I just unplugged the thing. Might there be a setting in Linux or something in my thinkpad x220 to adjust to get a better pic?
