"Unable to locate printer" error

#1

Post by Tod » Sun Jan 27, 2019 1:32 pm

I am new to MX Linux and would be grateful for some help in setting up my Epson ET-3600 printer.

I have managed to setup a dual boot on my Lenovo Thinkpad for Windows 7 plus Mx Linux (which I keep fully upgraded, so I am now on version 18). This is working well.

My printer works when I boot Windows, but on Linux the problem occurs after adding the printer in both Print Settings and Printers (CUPS). While adding, the Epson ET-3600 printer is detected and I take all the default options offered, and the icon appears in the printer list with the status shown as Idle. So far so good. (I have to use the Epson ET-2600 driver as there is no driver for the ET-3600, but this has been reported as working by a forum member.) However, when I try to print a test page, I get the error message:

"Unable to locate printer - EPSON7ECC45.local"

I don't understand why it can't locate the printer for printing, when it located it for adding it to the printer list.

Is there anything else I need to tweak so it can locate the printer at print time? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

A simple solution to this DSD-SDn vs DHCP-DNS name resultion missmatch would be to add two lines to you /etc/hosts table:
Example :
Assuming for this example your printer IP addrees is 192.168.172.45
Than I would add this to
/etc/hosts

Code: Select all

192.168.172.45 EPSON7ECC45
192.168.172.45 EPSON7ECC45.local
One way to find the ip-address of the printer would be to run

Code: Select all

sudo arp-scan --localnet
( after aving installed arp-scan ;=)

The link revealed another solution which boils down,
when using the example IP-address for this printer,
to run (as normal user)

Code: Select all

avahi-resolve-host-name --address 192.168.172.45
which should report (if the printer is reporting to ahavi properly) this:

Code: Select all

192.168.172.45 EPSON7ECC45.local
So avahi would report the idential DNS-mapping as we
would have manually put into the hosts table.

And running

Code: Select all

avahi-discover
will bring up a window where you can see all the devices on your network. Clicking on one will show you the details, including the IP address. It has separate sections for ipv6 & ipv 4 address. In most cases it will be easier to use the entry under the ipv4 address.

Yea, I love avahi-discover - ( if it works ;) (as some printer seem to not talk nicely to avahi  )

Thank you all for your suggestions. How can I find a copy of avahi to install? I have been into both package managers on my menu, and there is nothing called simply 'avahi' to install.

Please ignore my previous post, unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to properly install and run a daemon at the moment, so I'll have to manage without avahi.

I managed to find the IP address that I saved when I set the printer up in Windows. I have added the two lines to the etc/hosts file, but am now getting an error message: "The printer is not responding".

I did search the repos list (using the link from the manual) but could not find anything there called "avahi-discover". So I am completely stuck at the moment and would be grateful for any further suggestions. I have to get this expensive printer working or I will be doomed to go back to Windows :(
